Job Description

Holyoke High School Dean Campus seeks a Career Technical Education teacher for our Cosmetology program. The Cosmetology Instructor is responsible for teaching the Massachusetts Cosmetology Frameworks to students in grades 9-12 and preparing students with the technical knowledge, hands-on skills, professional habits, safety practices, and workplace expectations needed to become competent professionals in the field of cosmetology.

The instructor will provide classroom, salon lab, and applied learning experiences aligned to district-approved curriculum, state frameworks, industry expectations, and student needs. The instructor will modify curriculum and instruction to accommodate different learning styles, student backgrounds, language needs, and abilities. The instructor will develop lesson plans, maintain accurate records, demonstrate occupational materials and processes, guide student activities, support students in attaining required competencies, ensure safety protocols, and communicate regularly with students, families, school counselors, employers, administrators, and industry partners.

The instructor will also collaborate with the CTE Director to support work-based learning opportunities for students, including cooperative education placements when appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The teacher will:

Teach the district-approved curriculum aligned to the Massachusetts Cosmetology Frameworks, educational guidelines, and program expectations.

Prepare and implement lesson plans that address the individual needs, interests, learning styles, backgrounds, and abilities of students.

Create and maintain a positive, respectful, inclusive, and productive classroom and salon lab environment for effective learning.

Encourage students to maintain high standards of behavior, professionalism, work ethic, and safety, especially during hands-on projects, salon lab activities, and client-service practice.

Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, demonstrations, projects, technical competencies, and workplace readiness expectations.

Demonstrate occupational materials, equipment, tools, products, instruments, and processes using appropriate instructional aids, models, mockups, demonstrations, and hands-on learning experiences.

Guide students in the selection, practice, and performance of appropriate activities and help students attain required technical and employability competencies.

Provide individual and group instruction based on student needs, activity requirements, safety expectations, and program standards.

Mentor students to understand the importance of postsecondary education, continued training, licensure, professional conduct, and a strong work ethic.

Collaborate with the CTE Director and Co-op Coordinator to facilitate work-based learning experiences for students, including cooperative education opportunities when appropriate.

Instruct students on safety precautions and the proper operation, sanitation, disinfection, storage, and use of tools, products, instruments, materials, and equipment.

Teach and reinforce salon safety, sanitation, infection control, Universal Precautions, Safety Data Sheets, personal protective equipment, prevention of cross-contamination, and safe workplace practices.

Manage the storage, maintenance, inventory, and use of materials, tools, products, equipment, and property to prevent loss, misuse, or unsafe conditions.

Establish and maintain standards of student conduct that support an orderly, safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.

Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, discipline, technical skill development, safety performance, and progress toward competencies.

Communicate regularly with employers, parents and guardians, school counselors, administrators, and support staff regarding individual student progress.

Evaluate each student's performance, knowledge, technical skills, employability skills, professional conduct, and progress toward course and program expectations.

Prepare progress reports and other required documentation in a timely and accurate manner.

Stay current in the field of cosmetology and teaching techniques through professional development, industry learning, and ongoing review of current practices.

Collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team to achieve school, program, and student success goals.

Use computers, instructional technology, and software tools effectively for instructional and administrative purposes.

Fulfill any additional teaching duties as assigned by the CTE Director or school administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Hold the appropriate Chapter 74 teaching license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or be eligible to obtain such a license or waiver.
• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Have at least five years of recent, full-time employment experience directly related to cosmetology, preferably within the last seven years, or meet the applicable Massachusetts Career Technical Education licensure requirements.
• Achieve a passing score of at least 70 percent on both the written and performance exams for cosmetology, or be eligible to meet this requirement.
• Hold a current Massachusetts Cosmetology License.
• Hold a current Massachusetts Master Cosmetology License.
• Attain a passing score in either CTE Literacy Skills or Communication and Literacy Skills, or be eligible to meet this requirement.
• Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students, staff, administrators, parents and guardians, employers, and the public while creating a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.
• Exhibit the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Have experience working with computers, instructional technology, and software tools.
• Prior teaching experience preferred.
• Experience working in an urban setting preferred.
• Experience working with diverse student populations preferred.
