You will act as a knowledge consultant in product development and cost engineering-related projects.
You will be based in our Wroclaw office as part of McKinsey's Product Development and Procurement team. Your team helps clients improve product competitiveness through product development, value engineering, target costing, and cost transparency. Your team serves clients across multiple sectors, with a strong presence in automotive and assembly.
Your role is designed to build a long-term career in cost engineering with a focus on the automotive industry. With your understanding of the fundamentals of automotive products, components, and manufacturing, and your motivation to keep developing into a strong, trusted cost engineering expert, you will be a valued knowledge contributor.
In this role, you will develop concrete product improvements within our value engineering approach and target costing projects, while contributing to innovative ideas for cost reduction and product optimization. You will also work in our Design-to-Value laboratories by physically disassembling, analyzing, and redesigning products to identify practical improvement opportunities in cost, design, and manufacturability.
A core part of your role will be automotive cost engineering. You will build and challenge cost models for automotive components and assemblies, assess technical cost drivers, and support fact-based discussions with demanding clients on topics such as part design, material choices, manufacturing processes, sourcing logic, and target cost opportunities.
- Master's degree in automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or another relevant engineering field
- 2+ years of experience in automotive cost engineering, product engineering, manufacturing engineering, design engineering, industrialization or related fields
- Ability to analyze cost drivers related to materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances, complexity, supplier economics, and production volumes
- Good understanding of automotive components, manufacturing processes, and cost drivers
- Experience with cost modeling, should-costing, value engineering, target costing, product teardown
- Ability to work across a range of component categories, materials, and manufacturing technologies
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills with the ability to structure complex topics clearly
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively with people at all levels of an organization
- Strong business acumen and motivation to grow into an expert cost engineering role
- Willingness to travel
- Language fluency skills to communicate complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English
