COUNCIL ASSISTANT

We are seeking two candidates with organizational and administrative skills, advanced written and verbal communication experience, and the capability to professionally represent Council-elect Bobby Nichols and Council-elect Brooke St. George in community settings. Knowledge of policy issues and a passion for addressing constituent concerns are essential for success in this role.

This classification is unclassified, which means the employee or the City can terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any or no reason, with or without cause or notice. Moreover, the Council Assistant serves at the discretion of the incumbent City Councilmembers.

Pay Grade: 113

Annual Salary Range: $71,800 - $105,900

The successful candidate's placement in the salary range will depend upon previous experience in a similar role as determined by Human Resources and Hiring Supervisor.

DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position supports City Councilmembers by managing administrative, strategic, and external-facing duties. Conducts in-depth research to support policy development, draft speeches, talking points, and briefing materials. Position reports to the Mayor and Council Relations Director and serves at the discretion of the incumbent City Councilmembers.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following

  • Provides responses to constituent inquiries. Works closely with Councilmembers to understand and prioritize community needs.
  • Recommends and develops policies, projects, and programs in the best interest of Council members.
  • Organizes and coordinates City Council meetings, community events or office meetings; prepares agendas, researches background materials, distributes information, and records meeting notes.
  • Provides administrative assistance to City Council members, including managing calendars, scheduling appointments, handling constituent correspondence, arranging travel accommodations, and preparing procurement card reconciliation reports.
  • Develops, manages and publishes content for social media platforms, websites, and newsletters. Monitors community engagement, analyzes performance metrics, and adjusts communication strategies.
  • Researches issues and policies that are coming before the City Council. Provides insights to Council members and advises on possible course of action.
  • Prepares talking points, remarks and key messaging for press conferences, public events, and meetings.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Council, City staff, and members of the public, representing the city as special events, community gatherings public meetings, Board Meetings and City Council sessions.
  • May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in administrative, clerical, communications, community outreach, or related experience.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant's full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.

Education:

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Political Science, Public Policy, Public Relations, or related field.

The term "equivalent" means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal one-year increments for college-level education (2 additional years for an associate degree and 4 additional years for a bachelor's degree).

Professional Licensure and/or Certifications:

Valid driver's license
