HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Hold Valid West Virginia Teacher Certification/Licensure in School Counseling.
Hold, at a minimum a MA degree in school counseling.
Meet minimum standards for certification as set forth by the West Virginia Department of Education in Minimum Standards for Licensure of West Virginia School Personnel.
Fulfill continuing education requirement through professional development such as WVDE School Counseling Conferences, WVSCA Conferences, ASCA offerings, etc.
Uphold ASCA ethical and professional standards.
Satisfactory evaluations and/or recommendations from professional associates, employers and/or supervisors.
Exhibits knowledge of the duties and responsibilities as demonstrated in the personal interview.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, school personnel and parents.
Educational philosophy comparable with the Doddridge County Board of Education philosophy, mission statement and core beliefs.
Ability to work cooperatively with others.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Mental Health Coordinator
RESPONSIBILITIES: All professional educators must: maintain valid educator licensure at all times, renew educator licenses as set forth by WVDE, maintain positive work habits, perform duties as assigned and directed, maintain and upgrade professional skills, communicate effectively and exhibit professional teaching knowledge and strategies.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide advisement and appraisal for individual student academic planning and goal setting.
Provide individual and group counseling services related to academic, social, and emotional matters, to any student who requests such services.
Make referrals to appropriate outside agencies and individuals when the nature of the presenting problem(s) require expertise and/or training that goes beyond that of the counselor.
Act as an in-house referral source to programs available through the school system including special education, dropout prevention, and counseling.
Be an active member advocating for students at Student Assistance Team/IEP/other student focused team meetings when appropriate.
Assist the building coordinator with preparations for State/County Testing Program with duties assigned by the School Coordinator of State/County Testing.
Schedule and assist transfer and new students in adjusting to Doddridge County High School, as well as to obtain and interpret their transcripts from previous schools.
Coordinate referrals to the Mental Health Coordinator.
Interpret school records and test data to students, parents, and faculty while maintaining confidentiality of such information.
Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, and community for student success.
Maintain an ongoing system of accountability for counselor activities throughout the year, with submission of an annual report to the Coordinator of Counseling and Guidance programs prior to the last day of school.
Maintain an annual list of all individual student contacts, including the reason(s) for each contact (ie: career guidance, affective counseling, etc.) and the date of each contact.
Participate in Professional Growth Programs provided by the County.
Participate in a minimum of one job related conference annually, with expenses reimbursed in accordance with County Policy.
Carry out additional duties assigned by the building principal that are acceptable within the framework of the guidance and counseling profession and which do not interfere with the completion of performance duties as listed above.
TERM: 210-day contract (To begin the 2026-2027 school year).
