    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Huron Valley Schools is seeking Counselor who values collaboration with peers and is highly organized. This individual will demonstrate success assisting students to meet their full potential and have an impact on their learning.

    Position Type: Counselor

    Location: Lakeland High School

    Salary: Per HVEA contract

    Reports To: Principal

    Status: 2026/27 School

    Start Date: As soon as possible

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master's Degree in Counseling
    • A valid Michigan Teaching Certificate desired with an additional endorsement
    • Must hold a valid School Guidance Counselor License

    DESIRED QUALITIES

    • Knowledge of counseling techniques, strategies and parenting skills
    • Knowledge of legal mandates regarding provision of services
    • Knowledge of classroom instructional interventions and behavioral management techniques
    • Knowledge of scheduling software or ability to use proper technologies
    • Knowledge of resources and agencies providing services to students
    • Ability to effectively provide individual and group counseling
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, community, staff, etc.
    • Ability to problem solve and provide assistance in areas requiring conflict resolution
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Respect for confidentiality and integrity
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Professionalism and strong work ethic
    • Ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of individuals

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provide direct services through the guidance curriculum, individual student planning and responsive services.
    • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs.
    • Assist all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and emotional skills, goals.
    • Accurately and appropriately interpret and utilize student data.
    • Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning.
    • Provide individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
    • Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
    • Advise high school students about military, trade or technical schools, college applications and admissions, financial aid and college entrance exams.
    • Respond to school crisis and emergency situations.
    • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
    • Measure results of the school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate.
    • Monitor student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assist with appropriate interventions.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master's Degree or higher.

    LANGUAGE, MATHEMATICAL AND REASONING SKILLS: Ability to speak and write effectively. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral format and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
