Primary Duties

  • Demonstrates verbal and non-verbal communication to establish rapport and promote engagement.
  • Administers and interprets appropriate evidence-based screening and assessment instruments specific to the client to determine their strengths and needs.
  • Assessment of individual needs by evaluating screening information and observed behavior, including signs and symptoms of withdrawal.
  • Obtain relevant history from the person served and collateral resources, including child welfare and criminal justice, to establish eligibility and appropriateness of treatment recommendations.
  • Identify physical needs, medical conditions, and co-occurring mental health disorders which may present barriers and/or result in additional assessment and referral to ancillary services.
  • Possesses the ability to interpret screening and assessment results, synthesize a written summary including diagnostic impression, and provide appropriate referral based upon this information along with an individual’s strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences.
  • Match client needs with appropriate agency/community resources to facilitate positive outcomes.
  • Knowledge and application of evidence-based, culturally competent practice, including the Minnesota Model of treatment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) including SAMHSA’s 10 Guiding Principles of Recovery.
  • Documents counseling activities, including daily/weekly individual progress notes toward treatment goals and objectives in the electronic health record.
  • Knowledgeable of and can provide education to clients about the disease of addiction and related health and psychosocial consequences of continued use.
  • Identify chronic or emerging mental health concerns and provide individualized care and support as needed in an acute care setting.
  • Provide support for individuals in distress/crisis housed in an acute care setting, including understanding of how/when to make referral if necessary.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Florida Marchman Act and the judicial process of involuntary assessment/stabilization and involuntary treatment.

Minimum Training and Experience

Requires a master’s degree in field related to Human Services, which include but not limited to: Social Work; Clinical Psychology; Counseling; Rehabilitative Counseling; Counseling Education; Education; Criminal Justice; or Ministry from an accredited college or university and at least one (1) year full-time experience in a mental health and/or addictions treatment setting. A certification as an Addictions Professional (CAP) by the Certification Board for Addiction Professionals of Florida, is preferred.

Requires extensive knowledge of all aspects of addictions and/or mental health treatment and rehabilitation including familiarity with various models of treatment, understanding of various therapeutic techniques and approaches, and the ability to identify and utilize the most effective form of treatment with each client. Requires a strong knowledge base regarding the causes, symptoms, and progression of substance abuse and/or mental health problems.
