Job Title: Counselor

Job Summary:

Join our compassionate and recovery-focused team as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor. In this role, you will provide assessment, treatment planning, counseling, and recovery support services to individuals experiencing substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.

As a Substance Use Disorder Counselor, you will work collaboratively with clients to identify strengths, overcome barriers, develop recovery skills, and achieve meaningful treatment goals. Through individual, group, and family interventions, you will help individuals improve functioning across daily living, educational, vocational, and community settings while supporting long-term recovery and wellness.

Essential Job Functions:

Under the guidance of the Clinical Supervisor, Program Director, or designee, you will:

  • Complete screenings, assessments, and intake processes within state, CARF, and agency-required timeframes

  • Develop, implement, and regularly update individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and client progress

  • Provide individual counseling, group counseling, group education, family conferences, and recovery-focused interventions

  • Assist clients in identifying and addressing attitudes, behaviors, and barriers that interfere with recovery and overall functioning

  • Support individuals in developing healthy coping skills, problem-solving strategies, and decision-making abilities

  • Participate in clinical staffing, treatment team meetings, and case consultations while providing feedback on client progress and treatment recommendations

  • Maintain assigned caseloads and adhere to agency service delivery expectations

  • Complete all clinical documentation in accordance with agency, CARF, and state regulatory standards

  • Ensure documentation is completed accurately, entered within required timeframes, and supports treatment plan goals

  • Correct charting and documentation deficiencies within designated timeframes

  • Complete required correspondence, reports, and client-related communication in a timely manner

  • Assist clients through transitions of care, including discharge planning, transition summaries, aftercare plans, and related documentation

  • Respond to crisis situations and provide appropriate intervention and support

  • Maintain positive and professional working relationships with clients, referral sources, coworkers, and community partners

  • Represent the agency professionally within the community

  • Complete all mandatory trainings and continuing education requirements in accordance with state regulations, CARF standards, and agency policies

  • Demonstrate commitment to the agency's mission, goals, and strategic initiatives

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Clinical Supervisor, Program Director, Vice President, or Executive Team

Required Qualifications:

  • Missouri: Hold the credentials of a Qualified Addiction Professional as defined by the Missouri Credentialing Board, Inc. (MCB)

    • Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC), Certified Reciprocal Alcohol Drug Counselor (CRADC), Certified Reciprocal Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor (CRAADC), or Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor (RADC), Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP); or

    • Credential of Co-Occurring 

  • Kansas: Hold the credentials as defined by the Kansas Behavioral Science Regulatory  Board, (BSRB)

    • Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC) or Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor (LCAC) 

OR

  • Appropriate State Board

Applicant must be willing to become licensed in additional states, other than the state currently licensed in. Applicant must be willing andcomfortable with providing telehealth services to the individuals we serve.  

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to obtain licensure or credentialing in additional states as required by the organization

  • Ability and willingness to provide telehealth services

  • Experience working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders and/or co-occurring mental health conditions preferred

  • Strong clinical documentation and organizational skills

  • Ability to effectively manage a caseload and meet productivity expectations

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of caseload management, rehabilitation methods, and recovery-oriented treatment approaches

  • Knowledge of substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and co-occurring treatment practices

  • Knowledge of clinical treatment modalities, legal requirements, and applicable court procedures related to behavioral health services

  • Understanding of state regulations, CARF standards, confidentiality requirements, and professional ethical guidelines

  • Ability to establish rapport and maintain therapeutic relationships with diverse populations

  • Ability to effectively facilitate individual, family, and group counseling services

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and crisis intervention skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate clinical documentation and reports

  • Knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and program requirements
