Coy Lab – Laboratory Assistant

Job Summary

The Coy Lab in the Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a part-time, casual-status Laboratory Assistant to support research in microbial ecology and experimental biology. This position is well-suited for an organized, dependable individual who is interested in gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative laboratory environment. Prior laboratory experience is not required; full training will be provided.

Job Description

Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will support a range of day-to-day laboratory and research activities, including:

• Maintaining an organized and functional laboratory environment, including general workspace upkeep and inventory support
• Assisting with data curation, including organizing datasets, maintaining records, and supporting basic data entry
• Supporting experimental workflows, including sample preparation, setup, collection, and processing
• Assisting with microbial isolation using microscopy, with training provided for increasing levels of independence
• Preparing biological samples for downstream analyses, including proteomics and mass spectrometry-based workflows
• Contributing to a collaborative and supportive laboratory environment

Work Schedule & Location

This is an on-site position requiring a minimum of 20 hours per week during standard business hours. A supervisor will be present during working hours, and the assistant will work closely with other lab members.

Training & Development

Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided, including instruction in laboratory techniques such as microbial isolation, microscopy-based workflows, and sample processing for analytical pipelines. Responsibilities will expand with demonstrated proficiency.

• Interest in biological research (prior laboratory experience not required)
