Job Description

Alabama State University, Operations and Event Management, invites applications to fill the Crew Chief position. The Crew Chief will coordinate with the director ensuring the specifics for special events are carried out, and will be responsible for leading and supervising the daily work of the operations crew leaders in support of university events, facility operations, and campus services by ensuring that all assigned venues are properly prepared, maintained, and restored for academic, athletic, student, and community events while providing excellent customer service and maintaining a safe working environment. The Crew Chief serves as the primary on-site leader for assigned shifts, directing staff, coordinating event setups and breakdowns, monitoring facility conditions, and ensuring operational excellence across university venues. This position reports to the Director of Operations and Event Management.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead, supervise, and assign daily tasks to crew leaders
  • Coordinate event setup and breakdown according to approved diagrams and event specifications
  • Ensure classroom, meeting rooms, arenas, stadiums, theaters, and outdoor venues are prepared before scheduled events
  • Conduct pre-event and post-event facility inspections
  • Train and mentor new operations staff on proper procedure, equipment usage, and safety practices
  • Monitor employee attendance, productivity, and work performance
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, and safety standards
  • Operate and oversee the use of forklifts, lifts, utility vehicles, and other operation equipment
  • Maintain inventory of tables, chairs, staging, barricades, event equipment, and facility supplies
  • Report maintenance issues and coordinate repairs with Facilities Management
  • Respond quickly to operational emergencies and customer service request during events
  • Assist with crow management, traffic flow, ADA accommodations, and emergency procedures as needed
  • Communicate with event coordinators, athletic staff, and student organizations, vendors, and campus department to ensure successful event execution
  • Complete daily work orders, event reports, equipment inspections, and incident documentation
  • Ensure all venues are secured after events and equipment is stored properly
  • Support special projects, campus initiatives, and emergency operations as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree, 3 years of experience in facility operations, event management, building maintenance or related field, valid drivers license with acceptable driving record, must be able to obtain forklift and aerial lift certification, CPR/First Aid certified, be able to lift/move up to 75 pound of furniture, props, staging, staging equipment and displays on a routing basis, and have a flexible schedule to include working late nights, early morning, weekends, and holidays. One year of supervisory or team leadership experience is preferred.
