UTILITY CREW LEADER Pay Range: $47,673.00 - $66,742.00 Pay Grade: 54 FLSA Status: Non- Exempt GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Leads, supervises, and participates in the work of utility crews; performs related duties as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class supervises and participates in the construction and maintenance of water and sewer lines. Work includes directing the work of crews on projects, inspecting work in progress and upon completion, and answering and resolving questions and problems that arise during projects. Work also involves acquiring and using the required resources to complete the tasks at hand. Work is performed under the supervision of the Division Manager of Field Services or designee and evaluated on the basis of observation, and through conferences and upon the results achieved. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:This position involves very heavy work requiring the employee to exert over to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of construction equipment; considerable knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to perform construction work in and around traffic; considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in the construction and maintenance of water and sewer systems, etc.; skill and care in the operation of a variety of construction equipment ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to perform minor mechanical procedures; ability to supervise, train and instruct subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, and citizens. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:Graduation from high school and five years experience in heavy equipment operation (ie: backhoe) and the required certifications; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:Must possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License and water distribution or wastewater collection certification.
