Description

The purpose of this classification is to lead and perform responsible work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances that cover various animals, including those that may be diseased, unlicensed, dangerous, and stray.

Examples of Duties

Assists in supervising, directing, and evaluating assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, and completing employee performance appraisals; assists with training staff in the field.

Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.

Captures unlicensed, stray, uncontrolled, sick, or injured domestic animals, livestock or wildlife by means of traps, catch pole or other accepted means and transports them to the animal shelter.

Enforced the city's ordinances: issues warning noticed to owners of domestic animals, livestock and wildlife that are in violation; investigates and responds to complaints of cruelty to animals and violations of the animal control ordinances; works in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies; testifies in court regarding violations;.

Performs duties which ensure the welfare of the animals in the shelter: makes daily rounds to check animals in all areas of the shelter, ensuring satisfactory conditions, security, and proper enclosure; reports illness, deaths, or abnormal behavior or physical condition; helps to care for injured animals; administers medications prescribed by veterinarian; assists with euthanasia of shelter animals and properly disposes of remains.

Handles, prepares, and/or maintains the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position: prepares impoundment or disposition tickets; assists with the completion and maintenance of records on each animal at the shelter; completes daily work records; files offense reports.

Provides customer assistance to the visiting public: shows animals for adoption; completes adoption papers; collects fees.

Assists the supervisor in preparing and conducting educational programs for the public regarding animal control, to generate interest and support.

Operates a personal computer as well as other office equipment; two-way radio, hand tools, animal capture equipment such as traps, snares, catch pole, and snake handling equipment.

Typical Qualifications

High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience equivalent to Animal Control Officer; or any combination of education and experience which provides the skills and abilities requisite for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
