JOB SUMMARY
The Crime Analyst applies knowledge of Texas laws, police procedures and criminal behavior to perform statistical and analytical research through the use of advanced computer applications, public safety system data, and secure databases to plan, collect, assess, collate, analyze, and disseminate information for crime pattern detection, suspect-crime correlation, target-suspect profiles and crime forecasting. This position will actively engage in current cases, including Real Time Crime, to provide leads, locations, and active data to officers or detectives in the field. This will include operation of the Drone First Responder program.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma required.
- Associate degree or two years of college with degree work in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Computer Science, Statistics or a closely related field preferred.
- Experience in law enforcement or analysis work preferred.
- Certified Law Enforcement Analyst Program (CLEA) preferred but not required.
- FAA certified Part 107 drone pilot approval is preferred and will be required after a reasonable period of training.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess ability to apply analytical reasoning and perform routine mathematical calculations.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must have the ability to work effectively and courteously with associates and the public.
- Utilize word processing and other associated tools to prepare informational bulletins and informational update bulletins to inform appropriate department personnel of possible or emerging crime patterns.
- Create and publish crime charts, graphs and maps illustrating crime patterns and statistics.
- Continually research and evaluate the crime analysis function for improved procedures or processes.
- Develop and instruct training programs for police personnel and the general public.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the division commander or division supervisors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of crime analysis principles, practices and methods, state, federal and local laws, statistical analysis and a general knowledge of office management.
- Ability to discern matters which require confidentiality.
- Proficiency in use of computer hardware, such as personal computers, mainframes, scanners, modems, printers, and plotters.
- Proficiency or ability to become proficient in the use of an array of software/programs.
- Part 107 FAA drone pilot certification will be required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, in addition to the ability to apply analytical reasoning and perform routine mathematical calculations.
- Ability to work effectively and courteously with associates and the public.
- Comprehensive knowledge of research design methods, procedures and techniques used in statistical analysis
- Comprehensive knowledge of statistical program languages, performing data searches and managing data
- Comprehensive knowledge of computer software packages designed for statistical data
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) used in crime analysis such as ArcView/ArcGIS
- Ability to work under pressure within time constraints
- Comprehensive knowledge of report writing software such as Crystal Reports, SSRS, and Microsoft PowerBi.
- Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Access, etc.), SQL query language.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is sedentary and requires the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: climbing, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
