    Introduction

    THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL EXAM - YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY

    Qualified applicants must be current county employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Tuesday, September 29, 2026. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments.

    ABOUT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF''S OFFICE

    The Alameda County Sheriff''s Office is a full-service law enforcement agency accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for its law enforcement services, its Regional Training Center, and its Dispatch Unit; the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board for its Crime Lab; the Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board for its Explosive Ordinance Unit. Additionally, the agency''s health care provider, Wellpath, has experience working with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).Â

    The Sheriff''s Office has a current budget of approximately $600 million and has over 1600 authorized positions, including in excess of 1000 sworn personnel. The agency''s Chief Executive Officer is Sheriff / Coroner Yesenia L. Sanchez, who is assisted in the operation of the agency by Undersheriff April Luckett-Fahimi, Assistant Sheriffs Daniel McNaughton and Pace Stokes.

    The Sheriff of Alameda County is responsible for a vast array of tasks and duties, including the following:

    • Providing security to the Consolidated Superior Courts
    • Operating the Coroner''s Bureau
    • Operating full-service criminalistics laboratory
    • Performing Civil Process
    • Operating a County Jail (Santa Rita)
    • Operating the County Office of Emergency Services
    • Providing patrol and investigative services to the unincorporated areas of Alameda County
    • Pursuant to contractual agreements, providing patrol and investigative services to the City of Dublin, Oakland International Airport, Highland County Hospital, Social Services, and to the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District
    • Conducting a basic academy pursuant to Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements. [Sheriff''s Academy website]

    • Project Director of the Narcotics Task Force
    • Serving as the Executive Director of the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force

    THE POSITION

    Incumbents in this classification, found within the Sheriffâs Office, are responsible for performing research analysis on criminal, current and cold cases. Under general supervision, performs a variety of manual and automated crime data collection, research and analysis for the enhancement of law enforcement operations. This class is distinguished from Sheriffâs Technician which performs a variety of paraprofessional law enforcement support duties not requiring the analytical skill and computer knowledge of the Crime Technician. This class is further distinguished from the Crime Analyst by the emphasis on data collection and producing routine reports, as opposed to the Crime Analyst emphasis on comprehensive strategic and operational crime analysis.Â

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Either I

    Experience:

    The equivalent of three years of full-time experience as a Sheriff''s Technician or equivalent or higher level class in the Alameda County classified service working with law enforcement, criminal justice or court related policies, procedures and practices.

    OR II

    Experience:

    The equivalent of four years of full-time paraprofessional experience in a criminal justice, law enforcement, or court related policies, procedures and practices.

    Â

    Substitution:

    Possession of a bachelor''s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public administration, criminal justice or field related to the work may be substituted for two of the required four years of experience.

    License:

    May require possession of a valid California driver''s license.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

    Knowledge of:

    ⢠Law enforcement terminology and processes.

    ⢠Basic administrative research and analysis.

    ⢠Word processing, spread sheet and database applications.

    ⢠Principles and practices of statistical analysis.

    ⢠Standard office practices and procedures, including the operation of standard office equipment.

    Ability to:

    ⢠Collect, compile and analyze information and various types of data.

    ⢠Evaluate data to make sound conclusions and recommendations.

    ⢠Prepare accurate statistical and narrative reports, computer documentation and other written materials.

    ⢠Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    ⢠Interpret and apply applicable policies, codes and regulations.

    ⢠Maintain accurate records and files.

    ⢠Exercise sound independent judgment.

    ⢠Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

    EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

    THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

    1) A review of applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those applicants who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.

    2) A review of supplemental questionnaires to select the best qualified applicants to continue in the process.

    3) An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the applicant''s final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
