This position is responsible for performing criminal investigations for the District Attorney's Office.

Major Duties

  • Provides support to prosecuting attorneys during criminal investigations prior to and during the prosecution of criminal cases.

  • Conducts investigations on a wide variety of criminal complaints and felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, including such areas as NSF checks, spousal abuse, narcotic offenders, fraud, and child abuse.

  • Prepares and serves criminal process documents.

  • Makes arrests as necessary based on probable cause, bench warrants, search warrants, arrest warrants, and criminal complaints.

  • Provides courthouse and courtroom security during trials.

  • Locates and contacts victims, witnesses, and potential witnesses; makes travel arrangements for victims and witnesses; conducts background checks on potential witnesses; coordinates the appearance of witnesses at trial and explains court procedures to them.

  • Testifies in court concerning evidence gathered in pre-trial investigations.

  • Obtains statements, documents, and related evidence for use in court.

  • Prepares courtroom visual aids, such as diagrams, photographs, and documents.

  • Assists District Attorneys during court.

  • Checks and verifies jury lists.

  • Retrieves and stores physical evidence.

  • Operates police radios, computers, photographic and recording equipment, and other related law-enforcement equipment.

  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the purposes, principles, terminology, and practices required in criminal investigations, legal proceedings, and the judicial process.
  • Knowledge of legislative updates and professional mandates related to criminal investigations, legal proceedings, and the judicial process.
  • Knowledge of audio and video formats, evidentiary technology, and related court procedures.
  • Knowledge of evidence preservation and chain of custody requirements.
  • Knowledge of equipment, technology, materials, and chemicals used in criminal and crime scene investigations.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in interview techniques.
  • Skill in processing, analyzing, and preserving evidence.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have at least six (6) years of experience.
  • Must have a Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCOLE) license.

  • The work consists of varied investigative duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in the investigation of criminal cases. Success in this position results in the successful prosecution of criminal cases.
