The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy), Police Science Unit, is currently seeking an instructor. The instructor will function under general supervision and perform daily duties to support the operation of the unit.

Duties include:

  • Develops, updates, and delivers lesson plans and instructional content for the Police Science Unit. Conducts curriculum research to ensure training materials remain current, relevant, and aligned with best practices in law enforcement.

  • Serves as a primary or secondary instructor for both classroom and practical exercises within the basic law enforcement training program. Instructional areas include active shooter response, basic patrol operations, crimes in progress, building clearing, and arrest strategies.

  • Provides instruction and support for advanced police science training courses and may assist with training in other instructional units as needed.

  • Prepares, reviews, and updates student materials to ensure accuracy and effectiveness. Maintains responsibility for the currency and integrity of assigned training programs, ensuring alignment with job-specific knowledge, skills, and abilities identified through program task analysis.

  • Enforces student discipline in accordance with established policies and training standards.

  • Performs sworn law enforcement duties during critical incidents, including natural disasters and man-made emergencies requiring coordinated law enforcement response.

  • Participates in ride-alongs and provides operational support to partnering law enforcement agencies (state, local, and municipal) as needed or directed.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Associates degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Master's degree and two (2) years of law enforcement experience and
  • Experience must include two (2) years of road experience and
  • Experience must include two (2) years of investigative experience and
  • Currently Basic Instructor Development (BID) certified and
  • Currently a certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) and
  • Must be able to work some nights and weekends as needed and
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements.

Salary:

  • The hiring salary is commensurate with full-time LEO instructional experience: $60,696-$66,000.

  • Able to work under limited supervision using independent discretion and judgment.

  • Responsible for managing, directing, and controlling all training delivery in assigned areas of instruction.

  • Maintain good physical condition to facilitate the ability to conduct demonstrations and work in the practical problems training area.

  • Available to work some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • Must acquire/maintain a valid SC CDL license as required for student bus transport.
