Purpose: The Crisis Consultant provides crisis intervention, risk assessment, and mental health in the Emergency Department. Services include developing safety plans and providing referral/resource information to patients and families in a behavioral health crisis. This position provides consultation to and coordination of care of patients in crisis in consult with the Emergency Department healthcare team and the on-call Psychiatrists. The Crisis Consultant is responsible for identifying, referring, and advocating for patients needing behavioral health service, and other services as needed. Population served based on scope of services in the department.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Assists emergency room team in a consultant role to provide expert clinical care to patients and families presenting to the ED in mental health / behavioral crisis.
2. Responds to an Emergency Department request for consultation within one hour of request
3. Actively listens and affects a calming influence on the person in crisis
4. Assess the current mental status, risk for self-harm and risk for harm to others of the person in crisis
5. Makes recommendations to the physician/psychiatrist regarding need for involuntary or voluntary hospitalization
6. Provides follow-up with outpatient therapist and referrals to appropriate community resources/agencies for problem resolution
7. Safeguards the confidential information of the organization, including contractual information, and other business-related functions, as well as safeguarding Protected Health Information according to HIPAA and other state related laws
8. Communicates decisions and recommendations to the client and to other members of the treatment team
9. Formulates adequate plans for resolution of crisis
10. Maintain and model the organization’s values of Personal, Imaginative, Agile, and Connected
11. Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance
12. Performs other duties as required
Education and Experience Requirements:
· Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field or RN with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN).
· Three (3) years of psychiatric experience, or relevant clinical experience.
· Familiar with trauma informed care as well as the basics of responding to acute crisis situations.
· PREFER: Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN)
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
· Proficient in MS Word and Excel
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
· NYS license in one of the following: Psychologist, Behavioral Analysist, Marital and Family Therapist, Mental Health Counselor, Social Worker, Registered Nurse or School Psychologist.
