The School District of La Crosse is accepting applications for a 1.0 FTE Cross Categorical Special Education Lead Teacher at Northside Elementary/Coulee Montessori beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. Projected Start Date: August 11, 2026.
Wisconsin certification 1801 and/or 1810, 1811, or 1830 is required. Multiple certifications are preferred. Five years of experience as a Special Education Teacher required.
This position will follow the Northside Elementary/Coulee Montessori 2026-2027 school year calendar.
As a Lead Teacher, this role extends beyond individual caseload management to encompass departmental leadership and systems alignment. The successful candidate must possess at least 5 years of experience in special education and demonstrate strong communication and collaborative problem-solving skills. You will be responsible for ensuring departmental compliance with state and federal regulations, providing necessary coaching and training to staff and paraprofessionals, and strategically integrating special education programming into the building's grade-level wing model. In this capacity, you will act as a primary mentor and liaison, ensuring that specialized services are not isolated but are a core, functioning component of the broader instructional environment.
This additional position will be compensated with an overload contract and will be evaluated from year to year.
Prefer applicants possessing the following qualifications:
Experience with autism and EBD programming is preferred.
Special concentration in Learning Disabilities and/or Emotional Behavioral Disabilities.
Experience and demonstrated skills in assessing, instructing, and programming for LD and EBD students at the elementary school level.
Experience working with a team of regular and special educators to meet student needs.
Experience with developing behavior intervention plans.
Demonstrated skills in the use of assistive and adaptive technology to support student independence.
Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, CPR and First Aid.
Position responsibilities:
Instruction of elementary school students with learning disabilities and emotional behavioral disabilities including team teaching.
Management of all aspects of student program including functional behavior assessment, behavior plans, academic assessments, writing and implementing integrated IEP's, effectively consulting with staff and parents.
Ability to work as part of the IEP team to appropriately place students and monitor their progress.
Successful completion of a mandatory Job Specific Screen is required before employment.
