SUMMARY
The Crossing Guard is responsible for fulfilling the mission of Council Bluffs Community School District
(CBCSD) by ensuring the safety of children during appointed times while crossing traffic areas. This
position includes checking for safety of grounds/parking lots, setting up cones and directional signs,
directing traffic, and crossing students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties must be performed on site. Other duties may be assigned.
Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
Assists children to safely cross the street.
Records license plate numbers of any vehicles found violating the safety of the students.
Reports violators to proper authorities.
Assists in monitoring unsafe behavior of students.
Assists students with mobility needs, as required.
Coordinates and discusses traffic control points and routing plans with school and police authorities.
Comprehends basic safety procedures and practices relevant to crossing guards.
Works outdoors in all weather conditions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
In depth understanding of traffic signals, traffic patterns, and behavior
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, and safety
rules.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with students,
parents, school, community, and employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common
fractions, and decimals.

and to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Demonstrate respect for the dignity of students.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and the school community.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with
awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies. Demonstrates initiative and
creativity with students and their programs. Knowledge and experience working with computers and
software applications preferred. Ability to incorporate technology into daily routines helpful.
