JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Patient Care - Personally accountable for providing patient and employee safety at all times. Utilizes safe practices and procedures in surgical patient care.  Assists co-workers in resolution, and identifies, mitigates, and escalates potential patient and employee safety issues. Reviews surgery plan and appropriately prepares for procedure utilizing advanced knowwledge. Contacts Perioperative Coordinators and/or Lead Certified Surgical Technologist if additions and/or changes need to be made. Demonstrates understanding of advanced technical skill required to provide care to patients and families and the ability to effectively perform the skills. Independently scrubs surgical procedures in all surgical specialties. Applies knowledge and skills to work in any general or speciality service. Demonstrates ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed. Demonstrates the ability to make appropriate decisions, prioritize planned and unplanned events and mitigate potential/actual problems. Procedure preparation is focused on cost effective provision of supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care with positive outcomes. Anticipates instrument, supply, and implant needs based on knowledge and prior experience. Participates in orientation and training programs to attain competency in complex cases and procedures. Applies advanced knowledge of technology, computers, electrical safety, and robotic equipment as applicable to procedure type. Mentors others in equipment safety and knowledge. Applies advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology / Specialty of whole organ transplantation, vascular system/structures for optimum surgical patient care.  Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures.

• Leadership & Development - Engages in safety culture with active participation in regulatory requirements and patient safety huddles. Mentors co-workers about best practices for surgical patient care. Monitors and complies with safety practices. Sustains understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards and expected safety practices. Supports leadership by monitoring expected standards and requirements. Supports shared governance activities and participates in unit recycling opportunities. Engages in process improvement activities with team and collects data. Ensures individual certification and other unit/hospital requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis. Active involvement in one departmental committee.  Accurately identifies one's competence, using this knowledge to identify related resources. Seeks feedback from others as well as opportunities to update job knowledge and changing behavior in response to feedback and experience. Engages in professional development to promote safe patient care. Works with Educators to coordinate training, preceptor to orientees/students in the scrub position.

• Collaboration - Uses shared decision making; Engages in multidisciplinary team process, actively participating in effective problem solving, collegial learning and pursuit of best practice. Utilizes escalation plan when necessary, participates in patient situational awareness. Mentors others to utilize safe practice while utilizing safe practices. Deals with conflicts directly, constructively and tactfully, seeks leadership assistance when necessary. Assists others with mitigation/resolution to conflict. Supports, promotes and mentors others to maintain an atmosphere of cooperation, respect and trust within the team. Collaborates and is responsive to day-to-day needs of co-workers. Promotes collaboration among co-workers.

• Compliance - Patient Services Staff -Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Support leadership in Compliance efforts to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital. Be mindful and judicious in monitoring safety and departmental policies and procedures. Ensure all individual certifications and Safety College requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis. Work with department managers, to identify and share safety best practices. Be mindful of CCHMCs processes and compliance with CMS standards and freely communicate safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members.

• Exhibits advocacy & moral agency - Works on behalf of patient, family; incorporates patients values in care, whether similar to or different from personal values; moral decision-making may deviate from rules; engages the patient's family, encouraging them to speak/represent themselves; protects patient and family rights. Inquires about cultural differences and considers their impact on care, accommodates personal and professional differences in the plan of care; helps patient/family understand the culture of the healthcare system; Supports colleagues in ethical and clinical issues, escalates for assistance in complex situations.

Successfully completed the orientation process in assigned surgical department. Able to function independently in the scrub role.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree in surgical technology from an Allied Health Education Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) OR Associate degree in surgical technology from a program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES) OR Formal military training in surgical technology from the Army, Navy, or Air Force (68D Surgical Technology Training [Army], Hospital Corpsman [Navy], Surgical Services Specialist [Air Force])

• 2+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

• Maintains certification by participating in continuing education activities.
