CTE CAREER PREP/WORK BASED LEARNING COORDINATOR

Position Details

POSITION GOAL:

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of CTE, the Career Prep/Work-Based Learning Coordinator will primarily work to ensure the every CTE student has a career plan (talent portfolio, etc.) upon graduation from high school. The coordinator will also develop and oversee a "job boot camp" to help CTE students find jobs, research companies, write letters of introduction and communicate with employers effectively. Work-Based Learning site visits will also be a component of this position to ensure student safety compliance and assist with record keeping. Assistance with the OCTE Technical Review, Assistance and Compliance process (i.e., Perkins Core Performance Indicators, testing, etc.), will also be necessary. This position will help develop and deliver training to assist the nine local districts meet the Michigan Career Development Model standards. Coordinate will travel to all area schools to meet with students, both individually and in groups, to explore career opportunities and guide them to secondary and post-secondary options, including jobs, apprenticeships, and/or college. Career Coordinators will work with local employers and other stakeholders to build partnerships to benefit students and the community. The CTE team will also be responsible for events such as Career Fairs, CTE Exploration Days, MI Career Quest, Advisory Committees and promoting CTE to the community.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor's Degree or significant experience in an educational and/or workforce development/human resources area with extensive counseling and/or career mentoring background.
  • Strong knowledge of computer and software applications, especially Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps.
  • A teaching certification, a CTE certification or the ability to be annually CTE authorized as highly preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the St. Joseph County workforce, Career & Technical Education, the high school environment, as well as professional experience outside of education, including entrepreneurship.
  • The preferred candidate also will be experienced at coordinating events, will be an energetic presenter, a great team player, have a great work ethic, and enjoy working with middle and high school students.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with others including students, parents, peers, colleagues, employers, stakeholders, administrators, etc.
  • Demonstrated listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Proficient in computer usage, including emails, documents, and spreadsheets
  • Proficiency in career exploration software such as Career Cruising (Xello), Naviance, etc., preferred
  • Effective working in various locations out of the office

Performance Responsibilities: This position will focus on assisting CTE Consortium teachers with classroom management, organization, teaching strategies, and in meeting OCTE and Perkins requirements. Goals will include improving student outcomes and instructor performance in several areas, including but not limited to:

  • Assist CTE students in learning about career choices and developing a post-secondary plan.

  • Cultivating relationships with local employers.

  • Develop, implement and train best practices for career-focused exploration programming.

  • Work with the Career Exploration Coordinator and school counselors to develop a Career Plan for each graduating CTE student.

  • Work with high school counselors and administrators to create effective and efficient programming around the Michigan Career Development Model.

  • Assist CTE teachers with providing student instruction in the following areas:

  • Career exploration within the related industry

  • Job-Ready skills (researching employers, cover letters, resumes, portfolios, interviewing, follow-up, employer expectations, etc.)

  • Work-Based Learning opportunities

  • An understanding of entrepreneurship: starting and running a business

  • Scheduling training sessions at various county schools

  • Stay current with Youth Employment Standards.

  • Assisting students and local districts in using online career exploration software and completing EDPs, etc.

  • Stay current with workforce trends and opportunities

  • Attend meetings with workforce partners to build partnerships within the workforce pipeline.

  • Frequent travel within and around St. Joseph County

  • Maintaining regular in-person attendance

  • Communicate effectively within CTE and ISD personnel

  • Collect, maintain, and report appropriate data and outcomes to measure against metrics

  • Assists with MDE OCTE "TRAC" Procedures

  • Other duties as assigned.
