The CTRC is seeking a Clinical Research Nurse who is passionate about research, participant safety, and delivering high-quality clinical care. The primary responsibility of this position is to support the safe, accurate, and protocol-compliant conduct of human-subjects research. The Research Nurse will perform protocol-directed research procedures and assessments involving research participants, including clinical measurements, specimen collection and processing, and participant education.

The Research Nurse will promote research participant safety, recognize and appropriately escalate clinically significant findings or concerns arising during research activities, and ensure accurate documentation and adherence to study protocols and institutional requirements. The Research Nurse may actively participate in research participant recruitment and education and works collaboratively with the Medical Director, principal investigators, physicians, research coordinators and administrators, laboratory personnel, and other members of the research team.

Minimum Education and Experience

Education:

Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Experience:

At least three (3) years of nursing experience involving direct interaction with individuals in a clinical or research setting.

Licenses and Certifications:

Registered Nurse (RN)

Current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas issued by the Texas Board of Nursing. Licensure must be current upon hire and maintained throughout employment.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Current Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC). Certification must be current upon hire and maintained throughout employment.

At least one (1) year of nursing experience in a human-subjects research setting involving direct interaction with research participants and performance of protocol-directed research procedures.

Other Qualifications

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform protocol-directed research procedures and assessments in accordance with approved research protocols, study-specific procedures, institutional policies, and applicable research requirements.
• Perform phlebotomy and other protocol-required biological specimen collection.
• Process research specimens according to protocol and laboratory requirements, including centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, handling, storage, and preparation for distribution or shipment.
• Maintain specimen integrity by adhering to protocol-specific processing timelines, temperature and storage requirements, laboratory procedures, and applicable biosafety and shipping requirements.
• Perform and document protocol-required clinical measurements and research assessments, which may include vital signs, ECG acquisition, and other study-specific procedures within the scope of RN practice and demonstrated competency.
• Monitor research participants during protocol-directed procedures; recognize abnormal findings, symptoms, adverse events, or other safety concerns; and promptly notify the appropriate investigator, Medical Director, or other designated research personnel in accordance with study and CTRC procedures.
• Initiate appropriate emergency response procedures when indicated.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely research documentation, including documentation of research procedures, assessments, specimen collection and processing, and other protocol-required activities.
• Identify and promptly communicate protocol deviations, specimen-processing errors, safety concerns, or other research-related issues to the appropriate investigator or CTRC leadership.
• Participate in research participant recruitment, screening, education, and informed-consent activities as permitted by the study protocol, IRB approval, institutional policy, and delegated study responsibilities.
• Review and follow study protocols, manuals of procedures, laboratory manuals, source documentation requirements, and other study-specific instructions necessary to perform assigned research activities.
• Complete and maintain required institutional and study-specific training, including human-subject research and Good Clinical Practice training and, when applicable to assigned responsibilities, training required for the handling, packaging, or shipment of biological specimens.
• Demonstrate competency in the safe operation of clinical, laboratory, and research equipment required for assigned protocols.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with research participants and members of multidisciplinary research teams.
• Work both independently and collaboratively while managing multiple research activities and maintaining attention to participant safety, protocol adherence, specimen integrity, and accurate documentation.
