Overview

The department of Campus Dining handles all things dining on campus. From residential meal plans to event catering, we provide nutritional food for students, faculty, staff and guests. We manage over a dozen eating establishments at NIU including residence hall dining, restaurants and coffee shops at the student center, and the cafe in Barsema Hall. We employ the students and professionals who work in our restaurants and cafes.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Unit Management, this individual assist with the production of quality as well as visually attractive bakery goods.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operating Equipment

  • Operate all equipment, including Baxter ovens, rotary ovens, Hobart mixers, steam jacketed kettles, and digital scales.

Baking

  • Assist and/or place items to be baked in appropriate baking trays.

Food Preparation

  • Prepare items to be produced in the bakery.

Sanitation

  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of all equipment.

Equipment Preparation & Set-up

  • Prepare and set up equipment for utilization.

Other Related Duties

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of work experience in food preparation in a commercial setting.
  • As required by the position to be filled, possession of the Illinois Department of Public Health, Food Handler Training Certification (from an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited trainer).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)

  • Knowledge of food terms, materials, equipment and methods used to prepare food.
  • Knowledge of materials and methods used to prepare food on a large scale, use and care of relevant utensils and equipment and food values and nutrition.
  • Knowledge of sanitary procedures and directives; how to use simple cleaning solutions and equipment.
  • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise obtained in a commercial bakery setting (i.e. scratch baking bread, cookies, cakes, pastries, etc.).

  • Food Handlers Certificate or Food Service Manager Certification
