The Curator of Horticulture is an integral member of the Wildlife Care and Ecology leadership team, setting strategic direction and goals for the living plants collections on the DZCA campus, and leading a team of horticulturists and arborists to ensure optimal plant health, sustainability and guest experience. The scope of the role provides goals and oversight of activities both behind the scenes with work in greenhouses and production, as well as in front-of-house with plant collections in beds, planters and animal exhibits, and serves as the primary representative of the horticulture team. This position is a primary liaison for our partners in the City of Denver Parks and Rec and Forestry department. The position will also facilitate cooperative work with our Wildlife Health and Conservation team partners, including our Director of Nutrition and Director of Field Conservation.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and implement the Zoo\s horticulture strategy, ensuring plant collections, landscapes, and habitats support animal wellbeing, guest engagement, sustainability, and organizational goals.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t

Oversee all horticulture operations, including arboriculture, landscape design, plant production, collection management, and grounds appearance standards.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t

Direct the planning, design, and installation of horticultural elements for animal exhibits, capital projects, and campus-wide landscape improvements.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t

Manage departmental resources, operating budgets, and capital initiatives while maintaining accurate documentation and long-term stewardship of plant collections.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t * \t\t\t\t\t\t

Partner with animal care, facilities, and external stakeholders to support browse production, enrichment programs, research initiatives, conservation efforts, and volunteer engagement opportunities.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

Provide leadership and development for horticulture staff, interns, and volunteers by fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, professional growth, accountability, and exceptional guest service.

Experience Required

\t\t\t\t\t

B.S. in horticulture, landscape design, forestry, environmental science, or related fields. \t\t\t\t\tA minimum of 5 years leadership/managerial experience in a horticulture program at a zoo or aquarium, botanic garden, arboretum, or other public horticulture facility.
