CUSTODIAL ENGINEER

Washington, DC | Full-Time | Direct Hire

Salary: $62,400-$83,200 annually, depending on experience

Position Overview

We are seeking a Custodial Engineer to provide hands-on custodial, building maintenance, groundskeeping, and facilities support for a Client headquarters campus located in Washington, DC. This is a dual-role position requiring someone who is comfortable performing both daily cleaning and sanitation duties as well as minor repairs, preventive maintenance, furniture assembly, event setup, and general building-services requests.

The ideal candidate is dependable, hands-on, detail-oriented, and takes ownership of the overall appearance, safety, functionality, and readiness of the property.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily cleaning and sanitation of offices, conference rooms, kitchens, restrooms, showers, lobbies, hallways, elevators, stairwells, and common areas.
• Vacuum offices and workstations, remove trash and recycling, clean glass, sanitize high-touch surfaces, and maintain floors and carpets.
• Clean and restock approximately 10 restrooms, including four with showers.
• Maintain kitchens, break areas, appliances, refrigerators, and other shared spaces.
• Perform exterior groundskeeping, including litter removal, landscaping/plant care, leaf removal, and seasonal snow and ice removal.
• Conduct routine building inspections and identify maintenance, safety, security, or cleanliness issues.
• Perform minor repairs and handyman duties such as replacing lightbulbs, tightening hardware, adjusting doors, simple plumbing repairs, painting/touch-ups, fixture replacement, and furniture assembly.
• Assist with preventive maintenance and coordinate access and support for vendors and contractors.
• Respond to building-services requests and document work completed using online forms and tracking systems.
• Assist with meeting and event setups, including moving tables, chairs, signage, and equipment.
• Provide basic audiovisual support for meeting rooms, including monitors, microphones, cables, remotes, and presentation connections.
• Receive and organize deliveries, assemble furniture/equipment, and safely move supplies and materials throughout the campus.
• Conduct regular interior and exterior rounds to monitor security, building conditions, hazards, and overall property appearance.
• Maintain organized janitorial closets, storage areas, equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Use Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and online systems for communication, documentation, scheduling, and work orders.
• Maintain a professional, respectful, and discreet presence around employees, executives, meetings, visitors, and VIP guests.

Qualifications

• Experience in custodial services, facilities maintenance, building engineering, groundskeeping, handyman work, hospitality, institutional cleaning, or a related field.
• Must be willing and able to perform both custodial/cleaning and hands-on maintenance duties as part of the regular workday.
• Working knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, floor-care equipment, ladders, hand tools, and safe material handling.
• Basic skills in minor plumbing, painting, hardware, fixture replacement, furniture assembly, and troubleshooting.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, dependability, initiative, and follow-through.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple requests, follow checklists, maintain accurate logs, and complete tasks without repeated reminders.
• Strong communication and customer-service skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff, vendors, visitors, and leadership.
• Basic Microsoft Office skills and the ability to learn online work-order/tracking systems.
• OSHA, First Aid/CPR, HVAC, EPA, maintenance, or other relevant certifications are a plus.
• Valid driver's license may be preferred depending on operational needs.

Schedule

Monday-Friday | Approximately 8 hours per day

Typical schedules may fall between 9:30 AM and 7:00 PM, depending on operational coverage. Occasional evening work may be required for receptions, meetings, conferences, or other events, sometimes extending to approximately 8:00-9:00 PM.

Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on, physically active position requiring the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and regularly bend, reach, stoop, kneel, climb stairs, lift, carry, push, and pull supplies, equipment, furniture, and packages. The position also requires working both indoors and outdoors in varying seasonal weather conditions.

Safety takes priority over speed. Work beyond the employee's training, authorization, or safe physical capacity will be referred to qualified vendors.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in maintaining a property and is comfortable being the go-to person for day-to-day building needs. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable cleaning a restroom, responding to a maintenance issue, setting up a conference room, assisting a vendor, or identifying a problem before it becomes a larger issue.
