Position: Custodial Technician Reports to: Custodial Supervisor/Facilities Dept Location: Downtown Charleston, SC Hours: Full-Time Hourly, Non-Exempt Organization Background A leader in the performing arts in the Southeast, the Charleston Gaillard Center commissions, supports, and presents ambitious, multidisciplinary cultural programming and provides access to the best local, national, and global artists and companies on its stage. Through programming on its public campus and extensive arts education initiatives, the Gaillard Center serves as a platform to participate in community building and essential dialogue. The Gaillard Center was established as a non-profit in 2015. Its campus includes the world-class 1,818-seat Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall, a 26,000 square-foot Exhibition Hall that includes the Grand Ballroom and Salons, and a Terrace Lawn. Position Summary Custodial Technician supports daily facility operations by performing routine and scheduled cleaning in public areas, offices, restrooms, lobbies, corridors, and event spaces. This role works alongside the facility dept to maintain "best-in-class" cleanliness, adhering to daily/weekly/monthly cleaning tasks. The position may require some weekend and evening work. Responsibilities - Daily monitoring: Empty trash/recyclables, spot clean spills, dust mop/sweep hard floors, vacuum high-traffic carpets, and police entrances/elevators.
- Restroom maintenance: Sweep/disinfect-mop, wipe fixtures/counters, restock consumables (soap, towels, tissue), and sanitize high-touch areas.
- Surface/floor care: Damp wipe walls/surfaces within reach, dust horizontal surfaces, spot clean glass/mirrors, and perform routine floor scrubbing/buffing as scheduled.
- Event prep/support: Assist with pre-event light cleaning or post-event overflow as directed.
- Report hazards, malfunctions, or maintenance needs to supervisor.
- Maintain janitorial closets/equipment in neat order.
Minimum Qualifications - 18+ years of age; high school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous cleaning/janitorial experience, ideally in venues, hotels, or event spaces.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively regarding job tasks.
- Physically able to lift 25–50 lbs., stand/walk for extended periods, bend/stoop, and work evenings/weekends.
- Reliable transportation and flexible availability for event-based scheduling.
- Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and customer service orientation in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with floor types (carpet, terrazzo, marble, wood) and safe cleaning methods.
- Experience in high-volume public venues or performing arts facilities.
Skills and Knowledge Required - Efficiently perform routine cleaning tasks: sweep/dust mop, spot mop hard floors, vacuum high-traffic carpets, spot clean spills/streaks, and wipe surfaces
- Safely use janitorial equipment (mops, vacuums, sprayers) and apply disinfectants/general cleaners following safety guidelines
- Pay close attention to detail to identify and address dirt, smudges, high-touch contamination, and restroom sanitation needs
- Understand basic disinfection practices and safe methods for cleaning various floor types (terrazzo, carpet, marble, wood), waste sorting, and venue-specific rules

Physical Requirements - Physically capable of standing/walking for extended periods, bending, lifting 25–50 lbs., and pushing equipment.
