The custodian will offer students, staff and community with experiences that provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to use, learn, and play. The custodian must be willing to work around and with students and staff. In addition, the custodian must demonstrate the ability to flexibly follow a routine while managing interruptions to this routine.

The candidate must possess the following prerequisites:

  • Demonstrate the physical ability to perform required tasks such as bending, lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing and pulling.
  • Work willingly around, and with, students, staff and community members.
  • Possess high school diploma/equivalent.
  • Demonstrate technology proficiency.
  • Provide excellent evaluations and/or references.
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate and work effectively with others.
  • Project a positive outlook and a worthy ambassador for the District.
  • Work with a positive, supportive, and consistent manner.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills.
  • Adhere to and maintain confidentiality in accordance with state/federal laws and Columbia School District policies.
  • Support Columbia School District goals.
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with school staff, students, parents and community organizations.

The successful candidate shall ably complete work, which includes the following:

  • Show self-starter initiatives, including the ability to develop daily work schedules.
  • Follow a written routine for daily custodial care, including sweeping and vacuuming rooms, cleaning white boards and other surfaces as needed.
  • Disinfect, sanitize and clean sinks, toilets, urinals and appliances routinely.
  • Remedy, within reasonable budget and time restraints, general untidy internal and external building conditions, including the ability to:
  • Maintain tidy buildings and their immediate grounds.
  • See and remove cobwebs, dust, and other unkept-looking custodial needs without direction.
  • Properly repaint surfaces to help maintain great-looking schools and their immediate grounds.
  • Help maintain building paint records.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies within building as required.
  • Maintain floors, including dusting, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, and shampooing as needed or required.
  • Follow instructions regarding use of chemicals and supplies.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and the transfer to the Globally Harmonized System.
  • Replacing lightbulbs on a lift or ladder being comfortable with heights will be required.
  • Report needed repairs to principal, the lead building maintenance/custodian and to their supervisors.
  • Perform all other duties as required by the principal and maintenance supervisor or designees.

Mobility: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, push or pull 18-26 lbs., sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arm.

Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 50 lbs; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F +. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
