The Custodian 3 oversees day-to-day evening and night shift custodial operations to maintain the cleanliness, care, and appearance of the institution's facilities, helping provide a positive working and learning environment for the public, students, staff, and faculty.
This is a working lead position that performs all duties associated with custodial positions within the department. Responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining an assigned work area according to departmental standards, covering for absences, and ensuring projects are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
The Custodian 3 actively leads, supports, and engages in Pierce College's goals for equity and inclusion to help create and maintain a workplace that supports and respects accessibility, equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Essential Functions
The Custodian 3 will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:
Leadership
Directs, instructs and trains assigned personnel in routine custodial and housekeeping duties to ensure a clean, tidy, and safe environment for Pierce College.
Evaluates the work of team members and provides feedback on assigned tasks and projects.
Performs routine inspections of assigned areas and evaluates employees' work against established standards; identifies and addresses training needs.
Assists the Custodial Services Manager in determining staffing needs for assigned buildings and oversees activities within assigned areas of responsibility.
Assists the Custodial Services Manager in scheduling and assigning work as needed.
Responds to and documents actions taken on DirectLine (Megamation) work requests.
Prioritizes and organizes work to ensure responsibilities are completed promptly and deadlines are met.
Performs assigned duties in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and the goals of the institution and community and technical college system; stays current on relevant trends and regulations to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
Prepares simple written and oral reports.
Custodian 1 Support Tasks
Instructs subordinate staff in the safe operation of equipment used in custodial services activities.
Use and ensure that custodial personnel use custodial equipment, vehicles, materials, cleaning solutions, and supplies in a safe and economical manner.
Maintain key and portable radio security by verifying radios and keys are properly secured at the end of the shift.
Maintains records of equipment assignments; routinely checks and inspects the condition of facilities and equipment; takes necessary corrective action for deficiencies; and initiates work orders for repair and maintenance.
Maintains tools, assigned work areas, and assigned custodial closets in a clean, orderly, and well-organized condition.
Cleans and sanitizes college facilities, including public access areas, restrooms, toilets, shower rooms, and fixtures, in accordance with established procedures and standards; refills restroom dispensers.
Cleans whiteboards; dusts and wipes furniture; sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors; washes windows; and empties wastebaskets, trash, and recycling containers.
Strips, cleans, buffs, and applies finish to floors; operates and maintains high-speed floor buffers and polishers; and vacuums, cleans, and shampoos carpets.
Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and ladders used for cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, windows, and furniture.
Follows safety requirements for the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; prepares work orders for repair and maintenance; and maintains written custodial logs.
Cleans debris from entrance areas directly outside of buildings; removes snow and debris; and sweeps sidewalks and stairs.
Maintains the security of assigned areas and immediately reports hazards and security violations.
Identifies, reports, and takes corrective action to resolve custodial maintenance problems.
Oversees organic waste and shredding/recycling collection and disposal.
May be assigned to travel between campuses to provide custodial support when staffing is low.
In addition to lead responsibilities, performs daily custodial duties within an assigned cleaning zone.
Equipment Maintenance and Inventory
May be required at times to perform minor maintenance on Custodial Equipment.
When the Custodial Services Manager is absent, meets with vendors regarding new products, conducts product testing, and handles supply orders.
Coordinates custodial supply inventories to ensure sufficient supplies are available at all times.
Assists with budget control for labor and materials.
Prepares inventory records and reports using Microsoft Excel and OneDrive.
Training
Operates a safety program by training staff in safety practices and maintaining follow-up procedures related to accidents and safety prevention techniques.
Instructs employees in proper cleaning techniques and safety practices; maintains compliance with applicable policies and procedures; evaluates employee performance against established standards; provides performance counseling; and recommends corrective action to the manager when necessary.
Non-Traditional Events and Duties
During emergencies or inclement weather, and as directed by the supervisor, performs as a member of the essential personnel pool and performs assigned duties, including but not limited to:
Reporting to work during college closures.
Power failure mitigation.
Flood containment and mitigation.
Structural failure mitigation.
Other unanticipated incidents and emergencies.
Remains alert to, appropriately reports, and treats safety hazards as a first priority.
Participates actively and collaboratively during All-District days.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) classified, overtime-eligible position with Pierce College District. This position is permanent after serving a 6-month probationary period. The primary work location will be at Pierce College, Puyallup campus. Occasional travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. Regular and consistent attendance is required.
Work hours are Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM and Friday from 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM with occasional evenings and weekend work.
Shifts with the majority of time worked between 5:00 PM and 7:00 AM will receive a shift premium of $2.50 per hour.
Salary & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $48,048.00 - $54,204.00 annually, depending on qualifications, with periodic increments up to $55,596.00 annually.
However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. A comprehensive health care benefits package for you and your dependents includes medical, dental and vision insurance. Life and long-term disability insurance plans; vacation, sick and personal leave; reduced tuition; and retirement benefits are also provided.
Physical Work Environment
Scheduled hours will vary based on the colleges needs. The position may provide district oversight of custodial operations to cover extended absences. The employee must be available to respond to emergency situations during the work week, after hours, weekends, and holidays. This position is considered essential personnel. During inclement weather, the employee must be available to report to campus and assist with snow removal/deicing of campus grounds.
Must be able to stand and walk for more than 70% of the workday; lift up to 50 lbs. constantly; bend, stoop, and twist at the waist frequently; reach from knee to shoulder level frequently and above shoulder level occasionally; perform repetitive arm and hand movements continually; handle and grasp objects continuously; climb stairs and ladders occasionally; and tolerate frequent carrying, continuous pushing and pulling, frequent vibration from equipment, and occasional exposure to above or below normal temperatures. Continuous exposure to dust, chemicals, and equipment noise can be expected. Hearing should be within normal limits to communicate effectively with students and staff. Must have clear vision, with or without correction, to continually notice details.

Retirement and Supplemental Plans
Classified Pierce College Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems web site.
Employees also have the ability to participate in the state Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) and the State Board Voluntary Investment Program (SBVIP), administered by TIAA-CREF. These are supplemental retirement savings programs (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
Leave
Classified employees begin accruing 9.33 hours of vacation and 8 hours of sick leave starting their first month of employment. The amount of vacation an employee can accrue increases the longer they work with us (up to a maximum of 16 hours, 40 minutes per month after twenty-five years of service). A maximum of 30 working days (280 hours) of vacation may be accumulated. Employees also receive two personal leave days after four months of employment.
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.
Holidays
Full-time employees are entitled to ten paid holidays and a personal holiday of their choice (may be used after four months of employment).
Tuition Reimbursement
Permanent Classified employees working half-time or more may take space-available classes for $5 per quarter with the Tuition Waiver program (typically after a 6 month probationary period).
