JOB SPECIFICS

The Lead Custodian is responsible for overseeing custodial operations to maintain clean, safe, and secure County facilities. The role provides direction, training, and performance input for custodial staff while coordinating routine and specialized cleaning, floor care, event setups, minor maintenance, grounds work, and snow removal. Additional responsibilities include monitoring supplies, completing required documentation, inspecting facilities, and ensuring building security. The position requires regular physical activity, safe operation of custodial and maintenance equipment, adherence to established procedures, and the ability to support an inclusive and quality focused work environment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience providing training and work direction to others
  • Experience delivering consistent and excellent customer service
  • Experience in custodial work in a commercial building or manufacture building

SELECTION TECHNIQUE: Your training and experience will be rated based on the required application material submitted and the top scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.

HOURS/DAYS: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Work, schedules (hours and days) are subject to change based on department needs.

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $22.79 - $26.90 Hourly

JOB SUMMARY

The Custodian, Lead performs a variety of overall custodial maintenance tasks required to ensure the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security of County facilities and provides work direction and training to other Custodians.

EMPLOYMENT CRITERIA

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a high school diploma and two years of custodial work experience OR a high school diploma and a minimum of six months experience as a Washington County Custodian and demonstrated experience/skills in leadership competencies; such as supervision, leading, and guiding others, trainer, coach, instructor, post-secondary education.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform Lead Custodian duties:

  • Provide work direction to other custodians;
  • Provide orientation and job training to other custodians;
  • Provide performance input to supervisor;
  • Inspect facilities to identify needs that are outside of the normal daily routine and schedules work to meet needs;
  • Provide quality control;
  • Ensure standards of appearance and cleanliness are achieved; and
  • Serve as the primary contact for custodial work within facilities.

Perform scheduled interior and exterior maintenance tasks:

  • Clean, disinfect, and re-supply restrooms, gather and empties trash; clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing; clean furniture and fixtures; dust surfaces, clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors; vacuum and extract carpets; strip, seal and finish floors, etc.;
  • Set up, arrange and move tables, chairs, equipment, etc. for meetings and other events;
  • Identify tasks that may require outside resources and coordinate activities with supervisor;
  • Perform preventive maintenance service on assigned equipment;
  • Monitor supply levels and orders supplies as needed;
  • Prepare supplies and work order requests,
  • Locate and transport supplies and materials as needed;
  • Update usage reports for maintenance and inventory control;
  • Complete forms, logs, and other documentation as required;
  • Inspect and perform ground maintenance, including picking up debris, sweeping sidewalks, and entry points; and
  • Performs a variety of minor maintenance tasks as needed;
  • Perform snow and ice control tasks to include the operation of motorized equipment.

Maintain County buildings security:

  • Ensure outside and inside doors are locked;
  • Set security systems in designated buildings; and
  • Report alarms and warning signs indicating potential equipment failures and report deficiencies to appropriate staff.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed at county buildings. Occasional to frequent lifting, pushing/pulling of up to 40 lbs in the performance of duties. Rare lifting requirement of up to 100 pounds with or without assistance; trash compactor involves pushing/pulling up to 400 lbs with assistance. Exposures may include cleaning chemicals, seasonal temperature extremes, and on occasions bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and hazardous waste. Senses used on a constant basis are seeing, hearing, and smelling. Must perform the following motions on a constant basis: walking, bending, squatting, turning/twisting, kneeling, climbing, reaching out, reaching up, grasping, wrist turning, and finger manipulation. Equipment used may include but is not limited to: snow and leaf blowers, pallet jack, pick-up truck with plow, push/pull carts, rider floor scrubber, rider floor sweeper, rider carpet cleaner, walk-behind sweeper, ladders, shovels, hand tools, vacuum, floor buffer, broom, drying fans, telephone, pager, walkie-talkie, and personal computer. Additional physical/mental requirements may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the positions essential functions.
