The Position
Incumbent works under the direction of the Superintendent or designee, performing custodial duties to maintain the sanitation of the Douglas County Youth Center (DCYC).
Essential Functions
Clean and disinfect assigned areas (e.g. restrooms, breakrooms, high-touch surfaces) and restock consumable supplies (e.g. soap tissue, towels).
Complete floor care (e.g. sweeping, mopping, waxing, shampooing, vacuuming),
Empty trash and recycling daily and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
Comply with Civil Service Rules, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
Ready soiled laundry for pickup.
Deliver and stock laundered items ensuring available supply meeting needs.
Assist with moving various items (e.g. tables, cabinets, desks, chairs) and preparing for meetings or special events.
Collaborate with staff to maintain detention lock cylinders.
Clean custodial machinery and inform supervisor of defective or damaged equipment.
Maintain Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) book and inventory of chemicals ensuring chemical use compliance.
Collect biohazard waste containers and prepare for pickup and maintain biohazard spill kits sanitizing spills.
Assist with snow and ice removal and clearing debris from sidewalks.
Adhere to DCYC safety and security procedures.
Report to work at assigned location with regular, consistent attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned and directed.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency required.
Experience as janitor, custodian, or building maintenance preferred.
Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, conditional offer drug screen and physical assessment required.

Work is generally performed in a detention facility and occasionally outdoors. Noise level is usually moderate to loud. Work hours are typically assigned shifts; however, schedule may vary (e.g., days, shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime/extra hours, emergency call-in). Work involves potential exposure to dust, dirt, odors, chemicals, and biohazards. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources and uncooperative/irate individuals.
Work requires physical activity, including extended periods of standing, walking, balancing, bending, frequent reaching, and occasional climbing, kneeling, stooping, crouching and sitting. Incumbent must perform repetitive manual work involving constant hand, wrist, elbow, and arm movement and frequent to constant gripping and grasping. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift, push, pull and/or carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate cleaning equipment.
