Description
Saint Vincent College seeks applications for Custodian in Facilities Maintenance Office. This part-time position does not include any other benefits. Under general supervision, performs custodial and maintenance duties, including:
• Dusting • Mopping • Finishing and buffing floors • Vacuuming and shampooing carpets • Cleaning and identifying needed repairs • Reporting in written form to supervisor in case of emergencies • Restocking restrooms and showers
Must be able to work with a diverse group of department heads, such as Archabbot, Prior, faculty, department heads, students, tradesmen, outside contractors, and vendors, and custodians.
Required Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: No experience required, but a background in custodial work preferred.
Essential Duties
Work involves the use of custodial supplies and modern cleaning equipment and involves the moving and lifting of furniture. Work is performed in accordance with a well-established routine to obtain the established standards of cleanliness. The duties include:
• Washing, waxing, dusting, vacuuming, and polishing floors, furniture, and fixtures • Cleaning lavatories and replacing lavatory supplies • Empting trash bins and following the recycling program established • Shoveling snow, sweeping, and cleaning walks • Assisting in keeping immediate outside premises and building entrances in a safe, orderly condition • Cleaning and providing service to all horizontal and vertical surfaces, including glass walls, ceilings, and light fixtures • Working at elevated heights • Securing buildings and doors when not in use • Following instructions in regard to chemical use and safety hazards while performing daily duties • Replacing light bulbs as necessary, working from a ladder if necessary, and reporting needed repairs to the supervisor • Moving furniture and equipment to help supplement events, classes, and meetings • Performing related work as required
Ability to learn the materials, methods, and practices used in custodial work. Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment. Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment. Create a list of supplies necessary for assigned areas. Ability to work in different areas to provide coverage for absenteeism. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces. Ability to work effectively with others. Must be able to work from a ladder to change light bulbs, clean windows, and dust. Must be able to lift, pull, and push objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
