Description

Under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor and immediate work direction of a Lead Custodian, perform a variety of custodial duties related to maintaining assigned rooms, buildings, facilities and related areas in a clean, orderly and safe condition.Incumbents assigned to the Custodian classification perform varied custodial duties related to maintaining District facilities in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Incumbents assigned to the Lead Custodian classification oversee and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodians and participate in a variety of custodial duties to ensure that District facilities are maintained in a clean, orderly and safe condition.

Responsibilities

Monday-Friday 20 hours per week

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Working from a prepared work schedule, perform a variety of custodial duties related to maintaining assigned rooms, buildings, facilities and related areas in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, oil, buff and seal floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets.
  • Dust, wash and polish furniture, woodwork and metal work; wash windows, walls and mirrors; clean chalkboards and erasers.
  • Clean restroom sinks and toilets; clean shower facilities and locker rooms as assigned; fill paper and soap dispensers; empty and clean waste receptacles.
  • Perform minor non-technical repairs such as replacing light bulbs and tubes, adjusting desks and other furniture and adjusting shades and blinds.
  • Assist in preparing and setting up facilities for meetings and special events; unlocks and lock doors to buildings; move, arrange and remove furniture, staging, bleachers and equipment; set-up sound equipment for classrooms or special usage; clean facilities after events.
  • Pick up trash from grounds and exterior areas; empty garbage and trash cans; operate a utility cart and\or pick-up truck to deliver or pick up supplies or equipment and to collect trash; may assist in receiving, storing and inventorying supplies.
  • Report safety or security issues to Lead Custodian or supervisor.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Knowledge in the use of cleaning agents including solvents, disinfectants, detergents and polishing agents is required. Past experience in standard custodial practices, procedures and techniques in an organization with extended hours of operation and multiple high-traffic areas is required. A valid California drivers license is required. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed below and one year of continuous custodial or janitorial experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and interpret specification, instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively discuss work and respond to questions from co-workers and supervisors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of weight and volume measurement to mix cleaning agents.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:

Employment is contingent upon possessing and maintaining a valid California Drivers License. This position may require operating a District or personal vehicle in order to complete assigned work within the scope of the position duties.

  • Observe health and safety rules and regulations.

While performing the duties outlined in this classification, employees in this classification are regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk at a normal pace for extended periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb ladders to heights of 10 feet to replace lights; bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch; speak clearly enough to provide information to Lead Custodian or supervisor; and hear and understand voices to receive work direction; maneuver around in narrow or crowded places when cleaning classrooms.

Employees assigned to this classification must regularly lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required for positions assigned to this classification include ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.

The work assigned to this classification is typically performed in an indoor and outdoor environment. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes from cleaning supplies and dust or other airborne particles. The work environment is noisy.
