Custodian (PM Shift) JobID: 390 Position Type: Maintenance/Custodial/CustodianDate Posted: 8/27/2026Location: Cranbury SchoolDate Available: 10/01/2026 Closing Date: 09/18/2026 Additional Information: Show/HideREPORTSTO: Facilities Manager/School Business AdministratorJOB GOAL: To maintain a safe, clean and comfortable school environment.QUALIFICATIONS:Possesses a high school diploma or equivalent training/experience.Previous custodial, maintenance, commercial cleaning, or building-services experience is preferred.Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Ability to interact appropriately and professionally with students, staff, parents, and visitors.Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and use cleaning products.Holds a current State of New Jersey Black Seal Low Pressure Boiler License or is able to secure one within one year of employment and maintain thereafter on a yearly basis.Required criminal history background check and employment-authorization/identity verification under Form I-9.Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Chief School Administrator may find appropriate and acceptable.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The position generally requires the ability to:Stand and walk for extended periods.Bend, stoop, kneel, climb a ladder, and reach.Lift, carry, push, and pull custodial supplies and equipment.Move furniture and other objects as needed. *Being able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.Work in indoor and outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Building Security Closes the building each day as the schedule requires. Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are operational and secure and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.Carries a two-way radio provided by the school at all times while on duty. Building Work (Cleaning System as per Job Cards)Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times. Cleans, dusts, and disinfects classrooms, offices, library, offices, special rooms, and faculty room daily.Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly daily. Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of recyclables, trash, waste, and debris.Cleans corridors after each school day, and during the day when their condition requires it.Cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures and floors daily, and replenishes paper and soap supplies as needed.Cleans and sanitizes all drinking fountains daily.Cleans cafeteria dining areas and kitchen after use.Cleans chalk/white boards daily.Cleans glass in hallways, entrances, classrooms, offices, and display cases.Stores supplies and delivers supplies to teachers as directed.Obeys all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation.Operate and reset the fire alarm, and inspect fire extinguishers as required by State mandate.Inspects water level on each boiler daily in accordance with preventative maintenance procedures and maintains a log book for boiler operation.Moves furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the facilities manager or school business administrator, including but not limited to sound system set up, athletic events, and meetings.Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, (i.e., replacing light bulbs) making minor repairs (i.e., desks or chairs) and reporting major repair needs promptly to the facilities manager. All safety hazards, damages, leaks, equipment problems, or repairs needed are reported to the appropriate supervisor.Cleans all windows on both the inside and outside as scheduled.Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation, including stripping, sanding, and waxing floors. In addition, be able to operate cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, buffers, and other custodial equipment.Performs painting tasks, as needed and directed.Maintains personal work space in a clean and orderly manner. Grounds WorkKeeps the grounds free from rubbish and debris.Shovels, plows, salts, and/or sweeps sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking areas as necessary. OtherMay be required to wear a standard uniform (shirt, pants, shoes) and PPE, as needed, selected by the district for safety and security purposes.Arrive promptly for shift and follow all district guidelines for requesting days off from work (sick, personal, vacation).Performs related duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month employee. Salary to be determined by the board of education ANNUAL EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the board's policy on evaluations.
