Custom Fabricator / Metalworker

Location: Farmingdale, NY
Job Type: Full-Time, On-Site

Company Description

Harlequin is a global retail design agency specializing in the design, production, and installation of award-winning retail environments, window displays, interiors, and pop-up spaces.

With studios and operations in key markets including New York, London, Milan, Shanghai, and Dubai, Harlequin collaborates with leading brands to create impactful, visually engaging customer experiences.

Our team combines creativity, craftsmanship, and technical expertise to deliver projects from concept through fabrication and installation. Joining Harlequin means working in a multidisciplinary, international environment where projects are constantly changing and quality, problem-solving, and attention to detail are essential.

About the Role

Harlequin is looking for an experienced Custom Fabricator / Metalworker to join our production team at our Farmingdale, NY workshop.

This is a hands-on, multidisciplinary fabrication position rather than a dedicated welding role. While strong metal fabrication and welding skills are important, our projects require a wide variety of materials, techniques, and fabrication methods.

One week you may be fabricating and welding a custom steel structure, while the next may involve assembling a retail display, integrating LED lighting, building a scenic element, modifying an existing fixture, preparing components for installation, or helping solve an unusual fabrication challenge.

We are looking for someone who enjoys this variety and has a broad range of practical fabrication skills.

The ideal candidate is a problem-solving fabricator who can look at a drawing or finished design intent, understand how something needs to be built, and work with our technical and production teams to turn it into a high-quality finished product.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate custom metal components and assemblies from shop drawings, sketches, and specifications
  • MIG and TIG weld steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
  • Measure, cut, drill, bend, fit, weld, grind, and finish metal components
  • Fabricate frames, structures, brackets, supports, furniture, retail fixtures, display components, and other custom pieces
  • Read and interpret technical drawings and shop drawings
  • Determine practical fabrication and assembly methods for custom and one-off projects
  • Work with a variety of materials beyond metal as projects require
  • Assemble custom displays, fixtures, scenic elements, and other fabricated components
  • Build or modify scenic and decorative elements
  • Perform mechanical assembly and installation of hardware, fasteners, hinges, brackets, and other components
  • Build jigs and fixtures when required
  • Grind, dress, and finish fabricated components to a high visual standard
  • Identify fabrication challenges and develop practical solutions with the production and technical teams
  • Assist other areas of the workshop when projects require additional fabrication support
  • Participate in prototypes, first-time builds, and modifications
  • Occasionally assist with on-site installations, modifications, and troubleshooting
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Required Skills

  • Professional experience in custom fabrication, metal fabrication, scenic fabrication, exhibit fabrication, or a similar hands-on environment
  • Strong metal fabrication skills
  • MIG/TIG welding experience
  • Stainless steel and aluminum fabrication
  • Ability to accurately measure, cut, fit, and assemble fabricated components
  • Ability to read and work from technical/shop drawings
  • Comfortable operating common fabrication and shop equipment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work accurately while maintaining production schedules
  • Comfortable working on custom projects where the fabrication process may need to be developed as the project progresses
  • Willingness and ability to work across different fabrication disciplines rather than specializing in only one area
Additional Skills We’re Interested In

We don’t expect one person to be an expert in everything. However, candidates with experience in several of the following areas will be particularly valuable:

  • Architectural or decorative metalwork
  • Scenic fabrication
  • Exhibit fabrication
  • Retail display or store fixture fabrication
  • LED lighting and low-voltage wiring
  • Soldering and basic electrical assembly
  • Acrylic and plastic fabrication
  • Woodworking or basic millwork
  • Hardware installation and mechanical assembly
  • Prototyping and model making
  • On-site installation
  • Rigging or installation of fabricated elements
What We’re Looking For

This position is best suited to someone who considers themselves a fabricator and maker rather than only a welder.

Metalworking may be your strongest skill, but you enjoy figuring out how things are made and aren’t hesitant to work with other materials or learn new fabrication techniques.

Our projects can combine metal, wood, acrylic, graphics, lighting, hardware, and scenic finishes into a single finished piece. Because much of what we produce is custom, there isn’t always a standard way to build something.

We value people who can look at a challenge and think, “How can I make this work?”

You should be comfortable moving between disciplines and helping wherever your skills are most useful. Some projects will involve substantial metal fabrication, while others may require assembly, LED integration, scenic fabrication, installation, or general shop support.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who is resourceful, mechanically minded, precise, adaptable, and takes pride in producing high-quality work.
