Why does the job exist?

Customer Service Representatives are dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for all guests visiting the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. They enthusiastically greet and welcome museum guests while accurately managing cash and credit card sales for admission, shows, group rates and special events. The position assists guests with questions and comments to ensure that visitors have a positive experience. They provide high standards of customer service at the admissions desk, and support admissions and group sales as required.

How does it get done?

Greet patrons in a friendly manner.
Operating a personal computerized workstation selling tickets to the Museum, Dynatheater, Planetarium and for other educational programs, lectures, and all other events to the visiting public daily. Exchange currency correctly with members of the public.
Balance cash drawer at the beginning and end of the day.
Accurately account for discounts, coupons, and refunds.
Keep work area clean and presentable for the public and coworkers.
Operate and understand basic accounting practices using Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel and Word Processing Applications.
Ensure proper accounting by following all written policies and procedures.
Remain visible and accountable to visitors and coworkers at your workstation throughout the day.
Be polite, courteous, and provide a professional appearance by adhering to museum standards.
Remain familiar with what the Museum has to offer patrons with venues, exhibitions (permanent or traveling) shows in each theater, and upcoming programs and events.
Use professional etiquette when answering phones and fielding questions.

Who are the customers?

Visitors to the Museum, Museum staff, foundation staff, K - 12 schools, Universities, community colleges, teachers, community groups, day care providers, day camp providers.

Ideal Candidate

High School diploma or GED equivalent, and 3 years cashiering experience; interest in education and customer service. Weekends are mandatory. Ability to work various hours the museum is open to the public, to include some evenings, and during holiday events, as needed to ensure adequate coverage.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent.

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Public setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Some travel within the state may be required. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
