Position Overview
Florida Physician Group, a member of HSA Hospitals (Hospital Systems of America), is seeking an experienced CVTS Surgical Technologist – Vein Harvesting to support our expanding cardiovascular surgery program at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, South Florida. This role is ideal for a skilled cardiovascular operating room professional with specialized experience in saphenous vein harvesting who thrives in a high-acuity, team-based surgical environment.
The CVTS Surgical Technologist – Vein Harvesting will support cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons during all phases of cardiac procedures, with particular emphasis on conduit preparation for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and maintenance of an efficient, sterile operative field.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons during CABG and other open-heart procedures while maintaining a safe, sterile, and organized operative field.
- Perform or assist with open and/or endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting under the direct supervision of the surgeon for use as bypass conduits.
- Prepare, set up, and operate endoscopic vessel harvesting equipment, monitors, insufflation systems, and CVOR instrumentation according to hospital policy and manufacturer guidelines.
- Assess harvested conduit quality, identify branches, minimize vessel trauma, and assist with preservation and transfer of graft material to the operative team.
- Anticipate surgeon needs during procedures by passing instruments, sutures, and supplies efficiently and accurately.
- Assist with patient positioning, prepping, draping, exposure, hemostasis, and wound support as directed by the surgeon and within scope of practice.
- Maintain aseptic technique, complete surgical counts, and support infection prevention and perioperative safety standards.
- Document intraoperative activities, vein harvest details, and equipment use in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in call rotation, emergency care coverage, and flexible scheduling based on CVOR needs.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and other allied health professionals to support optimal surgical outcomes.
- Comply with hospital bylaws, departmental policies, credentialing requirements, and professional practice standards.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications & Skills
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent allied health or cardiovascular operative training program.
- Current Surgical Technologist certification or equivalent credential as required by state law and/or hospital policy.
- Demonstrated CVOR experience supporting cardiac and thoracic surgery procedures, preferably in a high-volume surgical setting. Specifically, experience as a cardiac surgical first assist / surgical assistant, endoscopic vein harvest experience, CABG and cardiac surgery background and ability to function independently in the OR
- Daytime OR coverage, with call negotiable if needed.
- Formal training and documented competency in open and/or endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting in accordance with institutional privileges and state scope-of-practice requirements.
- Strong knowledge of cardiovascular and thoracic anatomy, lower extremity venous anatomy, sterile technique, and surgical instrumentation.
- Experience with endoscopic vessel harvesting platforms, electrocautery, hemostatic devices, and standard CVOR equipment preferred.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment with excellent communication and attention to detail.
- Strong commitment to patient-centered, high-quality care and perioperative safety.
- BLS and/or ACLS certification may be required in accordance with hospital policy
