Primary Purpose
The Cyber Range Operator supports cyber resilience for students and community partners by organizing and executing high-intensity simulated cyberattack exercises in a state-of-the-art environment. These trainings are designed to evaluate participant preparedness, response effectiveness, and operational decision-making under pressures associated with data breaches and related cyber incidents. This role focuses on structured adversarial testing, incident escalation modeling, playbook readiness, and pre-and post-exercise analysis to educated students in the intricacies of cyber-defense and improve overall enterprise security posture.
Essential job functions:
- Learn and facilitate cyberattack simulations within a controlled physical and logical environment.
- Support red-team and cyber range operations to evaluate defensive capabilities.
- Assist instructors in the delivery of educational cyberattack scenarios to students of all skill levels.
- Monitor and evaluate participant performance and response effectiveness during simulated incidents.
- Identify gaps in technical controls, communication workflows, and escalation procedures.
- Document findings and provide clear, actionable recommendations to stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of incident response playbooks.
- Ensure all activities comply with organizational policies, legal requirements, and ethical standards.
- Ensure cyber range software/hardware and other administrative tasks are maintained and up-to-date as needed.
- Work with other Institute staff to ensure Range calendar and scheduling is kept current.
Occasional job functions:
- Attend occasional meetings, events, and conferences related to cyber-range and/or Institute for Cybersecurity & Emerging Technologies.
- Travel to customer sites for range-related activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Institute director.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Security, Computer Science, or a related field and equivalent experience/certifications
- Professional experience in cybersecurity operations, incident response, or threat simulation.
- Expert knowledge of network security, system behavior, and attack/defense methodologies.
- Experience in a training or instruction environment.
- Ability to perform effectively in time-sensitive, high-pressure scenarios.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Industry certifications such as CISSP, CEH, OSCP, or equivalent.
- Experience with cyber range platforms, tabletop exercises, or red-team engagements.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO, SOC 2).
- Experience working in enterprise or regulated environments.
Environmental conditions:
