Cytogenetics Technologist

Join our laboratory team and play a vital role in performing specialized cytogenetic testing and analysis. The Cytogenetics Technologist is responsible for specimen processing, cell culture techniques, chromosome analysis, karyotyping, FISH testing, quality control, and laboratory documentation. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to laboratory safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sample setup, harvesting, slide preparation, staining, and microscopic analysis.
  • Conduct chromosome photography, karyotyping, and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis.
  • Establish and maintain blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures.
  • Monitor culture growth and determine appropriate feeding, subculturing, and harvesting schedules.
  • Perform specialized staining techniques including G-banding, Q-banding, R-banding, C-banding, and NOR staining.
  • Analyze specimens microscopically and identify optimal cells for documentation and reporting.
  • Operate automated karyotyping systems and perform FISH processing and interpretation.
  • Ensure specimen integrity throughout all phases of testing.
  • Maintain laboratory records, inventory, and quality control documentation.
  • Participate in validation studies, new test development, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment, incubators, cryogenic storage systems, and perform routine maintenance procedures.
  • Train and orient new laboratory personnel as needed.
  • Utilize Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and laboratory data management tools effectively.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety, regulatory, and quality standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in Cytogenetics, Chromosome Analysis, Karyotyping, and FISH testing.
  • Knowledge of cell culture techniques involving blood, bone marrow, and tissue specimens.
  • Strong microscopy and analytical skills.
  • Experience with laboratory quality control and validation processes.
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work safely with biohazardous materials and laboratory chemicals.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to sit for extended periods during analytical procedures.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods during specimen processing and harvest procedures.
  • Manual dexterity required for laboratory testing and equipment operation.
  • May be required to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to biohazardous materials, chemical agents, and laboratory equipment in a controlled environment.
