Data Analyst IIData Science Team | Decision Engine Rules | Fintech
Employment: Full-Time, Exempt
About the Role
Our client is a fast-growing fintech company in commercial lending. Its data science team writes the rules that run the company's automated decision engine, which drives credit, risk, and account decisions every day.
As a Data Analyst II, you will own rule development from analysis to production. You will use Python and SQL to find opportunities in the data, turn risk and business strategy into rules, test them against history, deploy them, and monitor what happens after. You will work closely with data scientists and have a lot of independence in how you get the work done.
What You Will DoRule Development- Translate risk, credit, and account management strategy into rules in the decision engine, using Python and SQL to support the logic.
- Partner with data scientists to put model outputs and analysis into production rules.
- Back-test proposed rules against historical data to estimate their impact before launch.
- Validate every change before release so the logic behaves as intended.
- Monitor rules after deployment, catch unexpected results or errors, and fix them or escalate quickly.
- Document requirements, testing, deployment, and monitoring in line with the company's change control process.
Testing and Analysis- Design and analyze A/B and champion/challenger tests on rule and strategy changes.
- Spot trends, variances, and emerging performance problems, and bring them to the right people.
- Handle ad-hoc analysis and turn results into recommendations stakeholders can act on.
- Automate recurring analysis and reporting in Python where it makes sense.
Working with the Business- Meet with risk, credit, operations, and product partners to scope questions and requested rule changes.
- Explain test results and the effect of rule changes in terms any audience can follow.
- Manage your own workload and keep leadership updated on progress, risks, and concerns.
- Run quality checks on the data behind rules and reports, and dig into discrepancies when they show up.
What You Bring- Decision engine experience (required): hands-on work building or changing rules in a decision management or business rules platform, such as FICO Blaze Advisor, Experian PowerCurve, Provenir, GDS Link, Zoot, InRule, Taktile, or something comparable. Be ready to name the platform(s) you have used.
- Two or more years in a data analyst or similar analytical role.
- Strong SQL, including complex joins, CTEs, and window functions.
- Python for analysis and automation (pandas, NumPy, or similar), written well enough that teammates can read and reuse it.
- Specific examples of implementing, testing, or validating rule or system changes.
- Practical experience with A/B testing and the statistics behind it.
- Working knowledge of Tableau, Power BI, or a similar visualization tool.
- Proven ability to own analytical work and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Clear communication, particularly when explaining rule changes to non-technical people.
- A four-year degree from an accredited institution.
Nice to Have- Rule or strategy work in fintech, lending, banking, or credit and underwriting analytics.
- Experience with champion/challenger credit strategies.
- Exposure to Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, or another cloud data warehouse.
- Familiarity with Git and collaborative coding practices.
- Exposure to scikit-learn or other modeling libraries.
- A degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, data analytics, business analytics, MIS, industrial engineering, operations research, or another quantitative discipline.
Who Does Well Here
Analysts who are strong coders, take ownership, and don't need close direction to keep work moving. Good fits often come from data, risk, credit, underwriting, decision science, or BI analyst roles where they had their hands in a rules engine. Job title alone won't qualify you for this level. Direct experience writing and validating rules in a decisioning platform will.
Room to Grow
The team has a defined career path for analysts, with room to move up through Data Analyst II, III, and senior levels into lead roles. The rules you write go into production and directly affect how the company lends, so your work has visible impact from early on.
Work Arrangement and Other Details- Onsite at either the Sioux Falls or Sandy office for your first six months. After that, a hybrid schedule may be available depending on business needs, your performance, and leadership sign-off.
- Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Expect the occasional evening or weekend when a deadline calls for it.
- Candidates willing to relocate are welcome to apply, but the company does not offer relocation assistance.
- You must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship, now or in the future.
