Data Center Engineer (Fiber Optic Experience required) needed for a 3+ Month Contract onsite in Boston, MA

We are seeking a qualified and accredited Data Center Engineer to support data center operations in the Boston area. This role is suited to an experienced engineer who is confident working in live mission-critical environments and has a strong background in structured cabling, fiber optics, and telecommunications infrastructure.

The successful candidate will be responsible for installation, maintenance, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting activities while adhering to strict operational and safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform copper and fiber optic patching in accordance with client standards and documented procedures.
  • Install, remove, replace, and reseat network, telecoms, and server hardware cards and modules.
  • Carry out optical fiber testing using industry-standard test equipment, including OTDRs and light source/power meters.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot fiber faults and network connectivity issues.
  • Track and trace copper and fiber cabling throughout data center environments.
  • Conduct inventory audits of telecoms and network hardware, ensuring asset records remain accurate.
  • Label and document hardware, fiber infrastructure, and structured cabling to client standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed works and update documentation where required.
  • Support moves, adds, and changes (MAC) activities within live environments.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with site procedures, quality standards, and health and safety requirements.
  • Liaise professionally with clients, project managers, and technical teams.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Accredited and qualified Telecoms Engineer with demonstrable experience in data center or mission-critical environments.
  • Proven experience with:
    • Fiber and copper patching
    • Card installation and reseating
    • Optical fiber testing
    • Cable tracing and fault finding
    • Hardware and fiber labelling
    • Inventory auditing
  • Competent in the operation and interpretation of OTDR test results.
  • Experience using fiber inspection microscopes, light source and power meter test equipment.
  • Strong understanding of structured cabling standards and best practices.
  • Ability to interpret network drawings, cable schedules, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BICSI Technician (TECH), Installer 2, or equivalent telecommunications certification.
  • Manufacturer or vendor accreditations relevant to structured cabling or networking.
  • Experience working within hyperscale or enterprise data centers.
  • Familiarity with data center change management processes.
