Effective June 27, 2025 – 4.00% increase
 
Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

OPPORTUNITY
The County of Orange is looking to hire an experienced Data Center Technologist to be responsible for the day-to-day activities at our Data Center and to take on projects to enhance and improve the processes throughout the operation. This position would be required to be onsite daily due to the main responsibility to oversee and direct the operational activities on our Data Center floor and throughout the building.

The Data Center Technologist duties and responsibilities will be including but not limited to the following: 

  • Assisting with with OC Data Center computer asset management processes, including receiving and documenting computer equipment within the asset management system. 
  • Developing and maintaining documentation of computer cable trays, technology rack elevation drawings, power distribution and computer room Uninterruptable Power Systems
  • Tracking back and decommissioning unused cables that have been abandoned in the computer room
  • Assisting with processing new data cable runs in the OC Data Center (OCDC) 
  • Reviewing, approving, and assisting in monitoring new equipment deployments on the OCDC computer room floor
  • Assisting with the OC Data Center's quarterly and bi-annual inventory responsibilities 
  • Assisting with coordinating reporting on the OC Data Center preventative maintenance (PM) schedules.
  • Coordinating with the SAIC offsite storage manager to determine, document, and maintain data destruction disposition operations.
  • Interfacing with internal and external customers and vendors to determine their needs and provide solutions to fulfill their requests.
  • Reporting customer and vendor interactions to superiors for further discussion and problem solving.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES
In addition to the minimum qualifications,  the ideal candidate will possess at least 2 years of experience working in a mission critical environment, such as in a data center, hospital or power plant.

In addition to above, the ideal candidate will possess extensive experience and/or knowledge in the following: 

Technical Knowledge/Experience 
  • Understanding how rack systems are built and function
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems operability used in a data center environment: Power Delivery systems, UPS systems, Chillers and CRAC units
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment inspections, troubleshooting/repair oversight
  • Understanding of cable routing and specifications
  • Understanding of  how external connections ingress and egress from buildings
  • Ability to read and interpret single line drawings, schematics and blueprints
  • Experience with CAD/CAM (AutoCAD, Visio) software and the ability to update floorplans, schematics, elevations and blueprints
  • Understanding  the operational duties in a Command Center

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Structured Oral Interview (Weighted 100%)
Applicants will be interviewed and rated by an oral interview panel of job knowledge experts. Each applicant's rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the applicant's qualifications for the job. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.
 
Eligible List
Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
 
Based on the County's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
