Data Engineer II- Windows Servicing & Delivery Update Platform team

As a Data Engineer II on the Update Platform Insights team, you will use data to assess product quality, identify potential issues before they reach a broad customer population, and generate insights that help improve Windows update experiences. This role extends beyond building data pipelines. You will help determine how data can be applied to validate product behavior, improve quality, inform product decisions, and deliver measurable customer outcomes.

You will collaborate with engineering, product, and quality partners to build reliable data solutions, define meaningful product metrics, and translate complex data into actionable insights. You will also have opportunities to apply modern technologies and engineering practices to improve the efficiency, intelligence, and reliability of Windows update processes.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data assets that support product-quality measurement, validation, and decision-making.
• Transform and integrate data from multiple sources into formats that can be reliably consumed by downstream systems, reports, analytical tools, and engineering workflows.
• Implement processes to extract, validate, and monitor data to help ensure that data assets are accurate, complete, reliable, and appropriately governed.
• Use telemetry and other product signals to assess product behavior, identify quality concerns, and generate insights that guide engineering and product improvements.
• Develop metrics and measurement frameworks that connect technical performance, product quality, and customer outcomes.
• Investigate patterns, form conclusions, and translate data into actionable recommendations for engineering and product partners.
• Partner with stakeholders to understand data and business requirements and contribute to designs for data flow, storage, access, and consumption.
• Apply a validation and quality mindset across the full lifecycle of data solutions, from source data and pipelines to the product decisions supported by the resulting insights.
• Create dashboards, reports, and other analytical experiences that communicate insights effectively to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Follow applicable data-management, privacy, security, access-control, and compliance requirements.
• Collaborate across disciplines to help ensure that Windows updates provide secure, reliable, and high-quality customer experiences

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

• Masters Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering.OR Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering.OR equivalent experience.

Additional or preferred qualifications:

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering

• OR Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering

• OR equivalent experience.Experience designing, building, and supporting scalable data-processing solutions using Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Explorer, Power BI, or comparable technologies.

• Proficiency with one or more data engineering or software-development languages, such as SQL, KQL, Python, Scope, C#, or another object-oriented programming language.

• Experience using telemetry, analytics, testing, or validation signals to assess product quality, identify issues, and inform product improvements.

• Experience defining and monitoring product-quality metrics or KPIs and translating data into actionable insights for engineering or product decisions.

• Experience or exposure in quality assurance, software testing, validation, product analytics, or another discipline that complements data engineering.

• 1+ year(s) of experience with data governance, data compliance, and/or data security.

• Experience creating data visualizations and communicating technical insights to technical and nontechnical audiences.

• Experience with Git, Azure DevOps, or another source-control and engineering-workflow system.

Data Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
