Job Description:

Data Engineers develop and maintain data architectures, pipelines, and reusable data assets that enable advanced analytics, decision support, and enterprise data integration across the UPS portfolio. They design and implement scalable data solutions, including knowledge graphs and semantic data layers, to represent complex business relationships and support cross-functional analytical needs.

This role supports Marketing Strategy in collaboration with Data Science and Operations Research teams by integrating structured and unstructured data into reliable, reusable data assets. The position applies data engineering, semantic modeling, and graph-based techniques to enable advanced analytics, AI/ML solutions, and knowledge-driven insights aligned to business priorities.

This position is part of a small research and development team operating in a fast-paced and continually evolving environment. Team members are expected to take on a range of responsibilities, collaborate closely, and work through emerging business and technical requirements. The ideal candidate thrives in highly collaborative situations while also taking initiative to independently drive work forward and deliver results.

Responsibilities

Full systems life cycle management activities, including analysis, requirements gathering, design, coding, testing, implementation, and support of data pipelines and graph-based data platforms.

  • Design, develop, and maintain data structures, metadata, semantic frameworks, and data pipelines in accordance with UPS standards and policies
  • Ensure scalability, reliability, performance, and data integrity across data platforms and reusable data assets
  • Develop and implement knowledge graphs and semantic data models to represent business relationships and enable graph-based analytics, including traversal, path analysis, and network relationship analysis
  • Apply graph theory concepts to support relationship-based queries, path finding, and network analysis across large-scale datasets
  • Perform ETL/ELT processes using internal and external data sources
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver data solutions aligned to business needs
  • Develop data access solutions, including APIs and query interfaces, for analytics and reporting
  • Produce technical documentation and research emerging technologies to improve data engineering capabilities

Experience & Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in data engineering, data development, or related technical roles
  • Experience developing and maintaining data pipelines using modern data processing frameworks
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Bachelor's Degree or international equivalent in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field - Preferred

Technical Acumen

  • Knowledge of graph data concepts, semantic layers, or knowledge graph frameworks - Preferred
  • Familiarity with graph databases (e.g., Neo4j, Stardog, Amazon Neptune, TigerGraph) - Preferred
  • Understanding data structures, algorithms, and optimization techniques, including familiarity with graph-based algorithms (e.g., traversal and path finding or network analysis concepts) - Preferred
  • Understanding of data lifecycle management, including data ingestion, transformation, storage, and access
  • Familiarity with data warehousing concepts, scalable cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, Google Cloud, AWS), and distributed data processing environments
  • Understanding of machine learning workflows and data support requirements for analytics
  • Familiarity with API development and data integration patterns
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational database design and data modeling

The position is based in Atlanta, Georgia and will require commuting to the office. Employer will not sponsor a visa for this position. Candidates must be currently in the same geographic location or willing to relocate independently.
