The Smart Factory & Digital Transformation Group seeks a data integration architect to design and implement robust, scalable data infrastructure supporting LANL's critical Pit Production mission. You'll serve as the key technical liaison connecting data owners, producers, and consumers across laboratory organizations, translating complex requirements into elegant integration solutions that advance our Smart Factory capabilities.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Architecture & Design:
    • Analyze the existing data landscape to identify gaps, bottlenecks, and integration opportunities across multiple production systems to solve complex questions.
    • Evaluate and recommend integration patterns, tools, data pipeline frameworks, and middleware solutions aligned with enterprise standards.
    • Collaborate with development teams to integrate data flows into Smart Factory applications and manufacturing execution system.
  • Governance & Standards:
    • Establish, update, and maintain processes for data governance, security, and stewardship in compliance with DOE and LANL requirements.
    • Develop technical documentation, integration standards, and architectural decision records for enterprise-wide adoption.
  • Collaboration & Leadership:
    • Build strategic partnerships with data owners, producers, and consumers across laboratory organizations.
    • Translate business requirements into technical specifications and communicate complex architectural concepts to diverse stakeholders.
    • Mentor junior team members on data integration best practices and emerging technologies.

While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grow into the full salary band over time.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements: Applicants must submit a comprehensive resume reflective of relevant experience that addresses the minimum job requirements and desired qualifications of the position below for full consideration.
  • Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Analytical Skills:
    • Strong analytical skills with ability to explore, profile, and assess data sources for quality, completeness, and relevance, and recommend solutions to remediate data gaps for specific analytical use cases.
    • Experience performing exploratory data analysis to understand data relationships, patterns, and anomalies.
    • Strong investigative skills to identify, locate, and evaluate potential data sources across an enterprise.
    • Ability to understand analytical methodologies sufficiently to ensure data architectures support required analyses.
  • Data Management Expertise:
    • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing data integration solutions across heterogeneous systems.
    • Strong knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.).
    • Proficiency in programming languages for data processing (e.g., Python, SQL)
    • Understanding of data governance principles, data quality frameworks, and metadata management.
  • Leadership:
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
    • Track record of delivering complex technical solutions in production environments.
  • Accountability:
    • Experience working with confidential or proprietary information, classified documents, or sensitive information.
  • Communication:
    • Proven ability to work with domain experts and stakeholders to decompose complex questions into specific data requirements.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation.

Qualifications We Desire:
  • Experience with data discovery tools and techniques (e.g., data catalogs, lineage tracking, metadata management).
  • Familiarity with the VAULTIS framework.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or similar) to communicate data insights.
  • Experience with API design and integration (e.g., REST, GraphQL, message queues).
  • Experience with at least one major cloud or on-premises data platform.
  • Experience mentoring or leading technical teams.
  • Previous work in government, DOE, or national laboratory environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile/DevOps methodologies.
  • Experience facilitating requirements gathering sessions with subject matter expert.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position may/will require 24/7 coverage, which could/will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for the shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
