Data Product Owner - 512

Johnson Service Group (JSG) is currently looking for a Senior Data Product Owner with extensive data product management and financial services experience. This is a contract opportunity with an investment management company in New York, NY. Our client is seeking a Senior Data Product Owner to own the strategy, roadmap, and delivery of enterprise data products supporting critical client-facing and investment management functions.

Must Have skills

• 8–10 years of experience in data product management, data product ownership, or a closely related data-focused role within financial services.
• Proven experience owning and delivering multiple enterprise data products simultaneously, including full product lifecycle, roadmap ownership, and end-to-end data transformation programs.
• Strong hands-on data analysis and querying proficiency, including dataset profiling, anomaly identification, lineage validation, and data accuracy checks.
• Experience managing large, complex datasets across enterprise data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or equivalent.
• Working knowledge of data governance, data quality management, metadata management, data dictionaries, and data lineage practices.
• Strong product management capabilities, including developing product roadmaps and backlogs and writing user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional specifications.
• Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills with the ability to translate complex data concepts into clear business language.
• Experience presenting product roadmaps, business cases, and other updates to senior and executive leadership.
• Strong stakeholder management skills with experience serving as a liaison between business stakeholders and data engineering teams.
• Proficiency with product and project management tools such as Jira, Confluence, or equivalent.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to independently manage competing priorities and deliver quality work with minimal supervision.

Nice to Have skills

• Investment management or wealth management experience.
• Direct experience with asset or wealth management data, including portfolio and position data, investor reporting, AUM and flows, and trade and settlement data.
• Experience using generative AI assistants, LLM-based workflows, AI-powered analytics platforms, or similar AI tools to accelerate data analysis and product development.
• Experience evaluating and managing third-party data vendors.

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end lifecycle of multiple enterprise data products, including foundational datasets such as Client Master, Transaction Master, and Product Master.
• Define, maintain, prioritize, and communicate product roadmaps aligned with business objectives and broader data strategy.
• Develop and manage detailed product backlogs, user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional specifications.
• Define and track product KPIs, adoption metrics, and data quality benchmarks and continuously improve products based on outcomes and user feedback.
• Partner with stakeholders across Sales & Strategy, Finance, Operations, the Enterprise Data Office, and Engineering to identify data needs and translate them into well-defined product requirements.
• Lead discovery sessions, workshops, and user interviews to understand business challenges and define requirements.
• Serve as the primary liaison between business users and data engineering teams to ensure requirements are clear and delivered solutions meet expectations.
• Manage stakeholder expectations, communicate trade-offs, and maintain trusted relationships across organizational levels.
• Prepare and present executive-level updates, roadmap reviews, and business cases.
• Perform hands-on analysis of large and complex financial datasets, including profiling, anomaly identification, lineage validation, and accuracy checks.
• Define and enforce data quality standards, governance frameworks, and data dictionaries for owned products.
• Collaborate with data engineers and architects to understand data models, pipelines, and platform infrastructure and provide input into technical design decisions.
• Use AI and automation tools to accelerate data analysis, identify insights, and improve product delivery.
• Promote data literacy and help business users effectively understand, trust, and use enterprise data products.
• Manage dependencies, risks, and blockers across workstreams and proactively escalate issues with recommended resolution paths.
• Evaluate data tools, platforms, and vendors and manage vendor relationships where applicable.
• Produce clear documentation, executive summaries, and business cases to support decision-making and organizational alignment.
• Foster collaboration and shared accountability across business and technology teams.
