Title: Data Steward (Business Side) – Commercial Lines
Location: NJ

Why Work Here
This is a financially stable, long-established insurance organization with a strong performance history and a reputation as a great place to build a lasting career. The business intelligence team is genuinely collaborative — the environment is relaxed and down-to-earth rather than formal or stuffy, and people here actually enjoy working alongside one another. You would be joining at a pivotal moment, as the team evolves from a technically focused delivery group into a broader analysis and governance function, giving you real influence over how this role and discipline take shape. The data stewardship function is expected to expand over time and eventually grow into its own business unit, creating meaningful long-term opportunity. It is an ideal fit for a strong communicator who values teamwork over individual recognition and is looking for a long-term home.

About the Role
This is a founding business-side data steward role focused on the commercial lines domain, sitting within the business intelligence team and reporting directly to the team lead. You will help define and build out the stewardship function with limited day-to-day direction, owning a data quality initiative for your domain and keeping the business data glossary accurate and current. The position works closely with business stakeholders, IT partners, and the established Data Governance Office to ensure data is clearly defined, trusted, and suitable for both business and regulatory needs. A second founding steward focused on the claims domain is being created in parallel, and the two stewards will partner closely as the practice grows. Over time, the function is expected to add additional stewards and become more granular by domain.
Responsibilities

  • Apply data governance policies and standards across the commercial lines domain and ensure applicable regulatory requirements are met
  • Establish data quality expectations and rules, monitor data quality, perform root cause analysis on issues, and partner with IT to resolve them and build scorecards
  • Own and maintain the business data glossary, keeping definitions, ownership, taxonomies, standards, and reference data accurate and up to date
  • Build and curate a catalog of data assets so stakeholders can easily Client and understand the data available to them
  • Define, create, validate, and maintain metadata for assets in the domain, including managing Key Data Elements
  • Lead a data quality initiative from end to end with minimal day-to-day oversight
  • Provide a governance perspective on projects, enhancements, and other changes affecting data
  • Develop and deliver training and data literacy programs to drive adoption across the domain and the wider organization
  • Champion data governance within the business to build a culture of clean, reliable, and accurate data
Required Skills
  • Hands-on experience with Collibra for both data quality and glossary management
  • Formal, business-side data stewardship and governance experience — not just informal or incidental exposure
  • 3–5 years of experience in data management, data analytics, data engineering, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a data quality initiative and keep a data glossary maintained
  • Comfortable helping to develop a role and function with limited day-to-day guidance
  • Strong analytical, data management, and problem-solving skills, including root cause analysis
  • Ability to translate technical concepts for business stakeholders and communicate clearly with all levels of an organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams and business units
  • Bachelor's degree in MIS, business management, information technology, or a related field
Bonus / Soft Skills
  • Insurance industry experience
  • Experience at a large or enterprise-scale organization
  • Data modeling experience
  • Metadata and catalog management experience, including Key Data Elements, taxonomies, and reference data
  • Prior experience standing up or maturing a formal data governance program
  • Self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity and energized by shaping something new
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with an easygoing working style
