Description

The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the administration, maintenance, optimization, security, and operational support of Polk State Colleges Operational Data Store (ODS), Enterprise Data Warehouse, reporting databases, and related data platforms. Reporting to the Manager, Applications and Integrations, this position serves as the College's primary technical resource for database administration, data architecture, performance tuning, data quality management, and reporting support.

The Database Administrator reports to the Manager of Applications and Integrations and works closely with the Banner Operations Lead and Data Integrations Specialist to ensure institutional data is accurate, secure, accessible, and available to support reporting, analytics, compliance, and operational decision-making. This position plays a critical role in supporting Banner SaaS data integrations, data governance initiatives, Institutional Effectiveness, Accreditation and Research, and enterprise reporting environments, including Argos, Power BI, and other business intelligence tools.

Essential Functions/Duties

  • Administer, maintain, monitor, secure, and optimize the College's Operational Data Store (ODS), Data Warehouse, reporting databases, and related data platforms.
  • Serve as the primary technical administrator for institutional data repositories supporting reporting, analytics, compliance, and operational decision-making.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and optimize database structures, schemas, views, stored procedures, functions, and reporting datasets.
  • Monitor database performance and implement tuning strategies to improve system reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Data Integrations Specialist to support data movement, data validation, ETL/ELT processes, and data synchronization between Banner SaaS and integrated systems.
  • Work closely with the Banner Operations Lead to troubleshoot Banner-related data issues, reporting discrepancies, and data governance concerns.
  • Support Institutional Effectiveness, Accreditation and Research, Enrollment Services, Student Services, Academic Affairs, Finance, Human Resources, and other departments with reporting and data analysis requirements.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of reporting environments supporting Argos, Power BI, and other business intelligence platforms.
  • Develop and maintain SQL queries, views, stored procedures, and reporting objects used by internal stakeholders and reporting tools.
  • Monitor data quality, data integrity, data lineage, and source-of-record consistency across enterprise systems.
  • Support data governance initiatives through implementation of data validation controls, reconciliation processes, audit reporting, and metadata management practices.
  • Maintain database backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity procedures.
  • Implement database security controls, role-based access management, encryption, and auditing practices to protect institutional data.
  • Assist with Banner SaaS upgrades, Ethos releases, reporting enhancements, and integration projects affecting institutional data.
  • Create and maintain database documentation, data dictionaries, data models, standards, procedures, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives involving data architecture, analytics, reporting modernization, and enterprise data management.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Advanced SQL development, query optimization, and database administration skills.
  • Strong knowledge of relational database design, normalization, dimensional modeling, and data architecture principles.
  • Experience administering Operational Data Stores (ODS), Data Warehouses, and enterprise reporting environments.
  • Knowledge of ETL/ELT processes, data transformation, data validation, and data integration concepts.
  • Experience supporting reporting platforms such as Argos, Power BI, SSRS, Tableau, or similar business intelligence tools.
  • Knowledge of data governance principles, data stewardship practices, metadata management, and data quality management.
  • Understanding of source-of-record concepts and higher education data environments.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, database security controls, FERPA, GLBA, and information security best practices.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time, on-campus position within the Institutional Technology department.
  • Work hours may include evenings and weekends as needed to support critical operations, system maintenance, upgrades, or special projects.
  • Travel between Polk State College campuses and centers may be required.
  • Frequent use of computers and office technology is required.

Salary and Benefits Information:

  • This position is classified at Level P15.

Required Education:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Data Analytics, Database Administration, Software Engineering, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Database Administration, Information Technology, or a related field.

Required Experience:

  • Three years of experience supporting enterprise databases, data warehouses, reporting environments, or enterprise data management platforms.
  • Experience administering relational databases and developing complex SQL queries.
  • Experience supporting ODS, Data Warehouses, or enterprise reporting environments.
  • Experience troubleshooting database performance and data integrity issues.
  • Experience supporting reporting and analytics platforms.
  • Experience implementing database security controls and disaster recovery processes.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience supporting Ellucian Banner SaaS, Ethos Integration, ODS, Data Warehouse, Insights, and related Ellucian products.
  • Experience supporting Argos, Power BI, Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, Tableau, or similar reporting and analytics platforms.
  • Experience supporting higher education administrative systems including Student, Finance, Human Resources, Financial Aid, and Advancement.
  • Experience with data governance programs, data quality initiatives, and institutional reporting environments.
  • Experience supporting cloud-based database technologies and modern analytics platforms.
  • Relevant certifications in SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, Microsoft Data Platform, Power BI, database administration, or related technologies.

Alternative Credentials:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 7 years of directly related experience.

or

  • Associates degree with 5 years of directly related experience.
