Neighborhood House Charter School (NHCS) is a tuition-free open enrollment charter school for grades K1-12 in Dorchester that is a public alternative to traditional district schools. We serve over 800 students across two campuses predominantly from the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan. We believe in the social emotional well-being of our students and know that a well-coached and supported educator is instrumental in helping our scholars both academically and in their SEL growth. We do not give up on kids. Our expectation is that all of our students thrive at NHCS, graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education on the path to life success. Our educators are partners with our scholars and their families as they embark on this path.

What is the Day Porter (Custodian) role?

The Day Porter (Custodian) helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming school environment throughout the day. This role supports daily cleaning, building upkeep, event and room setup, supply restocking, and timely responses to facilities needs across the school. The Day Porter works closely with the Facilities and Operations teams to ensure all spaces are ready for students, staff, and families.

This position is based at our Queen Street Campus. The schedule is Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The hourly pay range is $26.49-$32.57, with final placement determined based on relevant experience.

This is a temporary leave-replacement position with the potential to become permanent.

About the Role

• Keep all areas of the cafeteria neat, clean and sanitary, with special attention given to chairs and/or benches, surfaces, and floor during, between, and after serving times.
• Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
• Keep all areas of school building and school grounds neat, clean and sanitary, including sidewalks, parking lots, play areas, athletic facilities, restrooms and office areas.
• Performs cleaning duties to include moving furniture, stripping floors, snow removal, and trash removal.
• Maintain a regular cleaning schedule that includes floors, white/chalkboards, trash baskets and bins, carpets, furniture, fixtures, windows, equipment, restrooms, school yard and other areas as designated by the direct supervisor.
• Assist with maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies and complete supply requests as needed.
• Report preventative maintenance in the building to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.

• Perform minor building repairs and report major repairs to the direct supervisor.
• Move furniture and equipment as directed.
• Assist with setting up and taking down facilities/equipment for special events.
• Follow established procedures for locking, checking and safeguarding facilities.
• Check daily that all exit doors, panic bolts and fire safety equipment are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
• Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
• Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Correct unsafe conditions in the school and report to direct supervisor hazardous conditions that cannot be fixed.
• Compile, maintain and file all reports, records, and other required documents applicable to the position.
• Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Working knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and cleaning standards. Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment.
• Requires the ability to use standard English to: read, communicate, understand and follow written instructions; write simple sentences, and comprehend labeling on products.
• Ability to work safely and efficiently with machinery.
• 5 years of experience required.
