Description

Note: This Daycare Teacher is a part-time position, limited-service role without benefits, working up to 28 hours per week and not to exceed 1,456 hours in any fiscal year.

Job Summary:

Under administrative direction, assists in planning, supervising, coordinating, and implementing the activities of the tiny tot program, and performs related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing activities in the Tiny Tot program.

  • Trains and evaluates part-time personnel within the Tiny Tot program.

  • Provides direct supervision of Recreation Leaders assigned to the Tiny Tot program.

  • Plans, organizes, and conducts programs and activities for children at the Tiny Tot Center.

  • Works closely with parents to support understanding of their child's growth and development.

  • Participates in the assessment and evaluation of ongoing departmental needs and requirements.

  • Prepares routine and special reports as requested.

  • Assists in the promotion of departmental programs and activities.

May perform other duties in support of the Community Services Department as assigned, including but not limited to city-wide events, youth and adult sports, teen programs, recreation classes, facility management, senior citizen programs, and other related services.

Typical Qualifications

Leadership and educational techniques and methodology including evaluation, planning, organizing, and conducting activities for children ages 3-5 years of age in a day care program.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of early childhood development principles, age-appropriate activities, and positive behavior-management techniques.

Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with children, parents, and staff.

  • Skill in observing and documenting children's behavior, progress, and needs.

Ability to:

  • Create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment for children of diverse backgrounds and abilities.

  • Communicate effectively with children ages 3 - 5 years of age and their parents; establish and maintain effective working relations with staff and the public; supervise and train staff; lead and instruct a wide range of activities.

  • Ability to plan and implement structured and unstructured activities that support social, emotional, and cognitive development.

Education and Experience Guidelines

Qualification for consideration in the selection process will be based on the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed above, as well as any combination of education and experience described below.

Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

Experience:

One (1) year of experience working with children in a teaching or instructional support role, such as teacher's aide, assistant, student intern, or other comparable experience.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this category require moderate physical exertion associated with the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or climb, which involve the safeguarding of individuals, public and property. This position also requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, including writing and using a keyboard. It also requires physical abilities associated with the ability to read, write and communicate in a work environment requiring no extraordinary physical strength or other special physical qualifications.

Licenses/Certificates:

A valid California class C Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Possession of an American Red Cross certification, or another Community Services Department-approved accredited certification, in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer is required.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS - PART-TIME

PAID SICK LEAVE - After 30 days of employment, will accrue one (1) hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a minimum of 3 days or 24 hours of paid sick leave to be provided in a 12-month period.

MEDICARE - The City of West Covina is part of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) agency and does not make any contributions towards social security. However, the City does contribute 1.45% of gross salary towards Medicare.

The City withholds 7.5% of gross salary per pay period on a tax-deferred basis that can be used at separation or towards retirement.
