This classification of DCS Correctional Teacher has a starting salary of $4,316 month

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, and completion of requirements for teaching certification.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid interim or professional Tennessee Teacher's Certificate is required.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class must:

• Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the date of application;
• Be a citizen of the United States;
• Possess a valid driver's license prior to and during employment;
• Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation;
• Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority;
• Have no conviction for a felony;
• Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointment authority;
• Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check;
• Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for use of illegal drugs.

Overview

An employee in this classification is responsible for professional correctional teaching work of average difficulty and performs related work as required. This classification also differs from the DCS Vocational Instructor in that an incumbent of this class focuses more on general education classes rather than vocational instruction.

Responsibilities

• Creates lesson plans that align state requirements and standards. Activities and materials are created using prior student knowledge.
• Creates assignments that are aligned with state content standards, require written task, measure performance in more than one way and include performance check throughout the year that will be monitored monthly through review with supervisor.
• Presents instructional content that establishes the purpose of the lesson, model performance expectations and uses concise and engaging communication as evidenced by monthly supervisor observation.
• Participates in treatment team meetings, staffings, and Child and Family Team meetings to ensure continuity of care for the youth and provide meaningful and direct feedback.
• Motivates students by organizing content to make it personally meaningful and develops a learning experience where curiosity and exploration are valued.
