Job Title: Instructional Paraprofessional:Deaf Education Interpreter and Support

Reports to: Principal of Assigned Campus / Assigned Teacher

Assignment: Assigned Campus

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt, hourly

Pay Grade: $24.00-$39.00/hour 187 days

Terms of Employment:

This FLSA non-exempt position (hourly) is on a work calendar of 187 days per school year. Pay is based

on years of experience from the annually reviewed hourly salary schedule.This position is grant-funded,

and continued employment is contingent upon the availability and continuation of grant funding.

Primary Purpose:

To provide for the physical and instructional needs of students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

in a Special Education and General Education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom

programs, including communication, self-help, behavior management, and instructional program.

Work under supervision of a certified teacher.

Education/Certification:

? High school diploma or GED

? Valid Texas educational aide certificate

? Certificate held from the Texas Board for Evaluation and Interpreters (BEI) or the National Registry

of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is required

Experience:

? Minimum of 1-2 years interpreting in an educational setting preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

? Ability to work well with children

? Ability to communicate effectively

? Knowledge of the Deaf Community and fluency in American Sign Language and thorough

knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support:

? Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

? Assist with the instructional program under the direct supervision of a certified teacher by adapting to

each student's physical, communicative, medical, and emotional needs.

? Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.

? Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.

? Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

? Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.

? Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

? Partner with general education teachers, speech therapists, and other school staff, to preview lesson

plans, technical vocabulary, and materials ahead of time.

Student Management:

? Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small

groups.

? Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes

lunchroom,hallway, and playground duty.

? Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

? Facilitate peer-to-peer communication during recess, lunch, group work, and extracurricular activities

to foster social development.

Other:

? Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

? Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

? Maintain confidentiality

? Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and other special events as

needed.

? Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing,

and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable

diseases.

Working Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: personal computer, printer, copier, and audiovisual equipment.

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying
